Lenape offers career classes

Variety of fields represented

FORD CITY — Lenape Tech, a comprehensive technical school that is 30 minutes from Butler, has been serving the needs of community and industry since 1965.

The Adult and Continuing Education Program offers a host of evening and Saturday classes, providing a variety of learning opportunities.

In addition to licensed practical nursing, classes are offered in a variety of fields, including trade and industry, computers, medical technology, and alternative therapies.

Lenape has something to offer for those who are interested in improving their workplace skills, exploring a new career or personal direction, or just to have fun. The majority of the instructors bring real-life experiences to the classroom.

New this term is a business development track focused on providing participants with skills needed to start a small business or to enhance someone’s ability to operate a business. The classes are introduction to business, marketing management, accounting fundamentals, business law and ethics, managing and organizing people, human resource management and business communication.

Among other classes that can lead to certification are the OSHA-approved sit-down counterbalanced forklift operator safety training, refrigerant recovery certification exam and review, which can lead to an EPA certification card, state inspection certification training for cars and motorcycles, basics and advanced notary training seminars, and servsafe certification for food service personnel.

Act 48 credits may be awarded for certain programs, and others can give the student the opportunity to explore a new career without a significant economic commitment.

Businesses often need customized training for their employees. Lenape has the capability to address the needs of businesses that need to upgrade incumbent workers’ skills or prepare workers for entry-level positions.

The LPN program is the only program of its kind in Butler and Armstrong counties. The demand for LPNs remains strong.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the job outlook through 2012 is good, with a projected increase of 10 to 20 percent.

The need is even stronger in nursing care facilities and nursing homes, with 21 to 35 percent employment growth.

The program, both full and part time, provides an excellent foundation for students to continue their education toward advancement in the nursing profession.
