The family guy

Cowher makes time to watch daughters play basketball

You would think the only thing running through Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher's mind these days is the Seattle Seahawks and Super Bowl XL.

Well, for at least a few hours Thursday, Cowher had more important matters to attend to. His daughters, Lauren and Lindsay, had a basketball game to play and he wouldn't miss it for the world.

"It puts everything in perspective," said Cowher, following Fox Chapel's 41-39 victory over Butler. "I don't think I enjoy anything more than watching my kids' sports.

"I cherish those moments, wins or losses," added Cowher, who has moved meetings and shifted his schedules to accommodate those of his daughters.

With the Steelers going deeper into the playoffs this season and with road playoff games at Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver, there are a lot of details, planning, packing and meetings, so home time is very scarce.

On Monday, the day after the Steelers won the AFC Championship in Denver, Cowher and his wife Kay were watching his daughters in a game at Seneca Valley.

"He's got a lot on his plate," said Lauren, a senior who scored her 1,000th point in that game. "He's the biggest family guy you'll ever meet. … He's missed only one or two games in my high school career."

"He always takes off work a couple of hours," said Lindsay, a freshman starter on the varsity team. "I'll ask if he's coming to my game and he'll say, 'Yeah!'

"He's gotten used to it. It's a routine thing since I was 2 years old," Lindsay added.

It started with Meagan, now a sophomore on the Princeton University basketball team and the team's No. 2 scorer this season.

Ironically, it was Lauren who assisted on Meghan's 1,000th point with the Foxes and Lindsay assisted on Lauren's 1000th.

"That was a nice way to finish it," said Lindsay.

And with Dad on hand to see it as well as Mom, who starred as a player at North Carolina State while Bill Cowher was playing football for the Wolfpack.

While the face of Cowher is intimidating to football fans as well as players, attending his daughters' games brings out a calmer demeanor in him.

"With Mom, if you make mistakes, she'll correct you," said Lindsay. "Dad will just say to play tougher."

"Mom has that piercing scream," said Lauren. "Sometimes, you'll hear her and my dad will be two rows in front of her with his arms crossed.

"But when you come home, it's nice because they know how you feel, win or lose.

"That's the type of guy he is. There's a sense of normalcy at home. I know he has a high-profile job. He has so much love for his family. He has three girls at home and all the boys at work," Lauren added.

"In this profession, my wife has been very supportive," Bill Cowher said. "That keeps me grounded. Family is first, the job is second. That'll never change."

One thing's for sure, however. Cowher won't be in attendance for Lauren and Lindsay's game Monday against Pine-Richland.

The Steelers will be in Detroit preparing for the Super Bowl.

"I haven't missed very many, but I will miss next week for all the right reasons," said Cowher, smiling.
