Role players come up big for Rockets

SLIPPERY ROCK — All the world knows about Jence Rhoads.

The Titusville girls basketball team certainly does.

But now it also is aware of some of the lesser-known Slippery Rock High players.

Like Danielle Drake. Like Shanae Raabe. Like Jenna Rinker.

The three unsung Rockets combined for 29 points to help Slippery Rock to a 66-48 win in the Rock Box Thursday night.

"Rhoads can distribute and score at will," said Titusville coach Kyle Krepps. "Our focus was Rhoads. We were going to let the other ones hurt us."

And the other ones certainly did.

Raabe hurt Titusville in the first quarter, scoring five of her nine points. Rinker did her damage in the second and third periods, pouring in nine of her 11 points. And Drake scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter as the Rockets held off a Titusville rally.

"It's nice," said Slippery Rock coach Gene Rodgers. "We've been juggling that fifth starting spot a little bit. We started with Danielle, then went to Shanae and when Ashley Brown got hurt, Jenna has had to step up.

"They don't have to do too, too much. They just have to do their role, and they've been tremendous at it."

Not to say Rhoads didn't inflict her own usual brand of damage.

The junior guard scored 23 points and also dished out 10 assists for the Rockets (14-4, 8-1), who dismantled Titusville with a pressing defense, forcing nearly 30 turnovers.

"That sounds like a typical Jence night," said Slippery Rock coach Gene Rodgers. "She does so many things for us."

Titusville (1-16, 1-8) didn't go quietly, however.

It closed the gap to 49-42 early in the fourth quarter, thanks to Steph Lorey, who scored nine of her 15 points in the frame.

"I'm thrilled with the way we played," Krepps said. "We've been struggling, but we've seen some improvement."

But Slippery Rock does what Slippery Rock does best: score points in a hurry.

The Rockets scored 10 straight points in a two-minute span to put the game out of reach.

"That's what we like to do," Rodgers said.

The coach was concerned about playing Titusville this time around.

That last time the two teams, both named the Rockets, battled, Slippery Rock won by more than 35 points.

Titusville's only win this season came against Grove City.

"I was really concerned because they beat Grove City the second time around," Rodgers said.

Titusville did out-rebound Slippery Rock and was particularly good on the offensive glass, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds.
