Cowhers sink Butler
BUTLER TWP — Cowher power.
It happens in the NFL and in high school girls basketball these days.
Senior guard Lauren Cowher scored 13 points and freshman Lindsay Cowher hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer for Fox Chapel in a 39-37 road win over Butler Monday night.
The Cowhers have a famous dad — Steelers coach Bill Cowher — but on Monday, they were the heroes of the family.
And Fox Chapel coach Jeremy Bennett was as elated as if his team had beaten the Indianapolis Colts.
"Anytime you can go on anybody's court in our section and win basketball game — by two points, 10 points, it don't matter — it's a great win," said Foxes' coach Jeremy Bennett.
Butler coach Dorothea Epps was understandably dismayed by the loss — the Golden Tornado's second section defeat in as many games.
Butler controlled the action in the first half, limiting Fox Chapel to just two field goals, but sent the Foxes to the line for 13 attempts, nine of which were good.
"The girls just aren't adjusting to how the game is being called," Epps said. "Giving them nine points is ridiculous.
"We were fine defensively. If we wouldn't have put them at the foul line, we would have held them to four points in the first half. We just didn't play smart."
Butler had two 10-point leads throughout the course of the game but couldn't put Fox Chapel away.
Turnovers played a key role in Butler's demise as the Tornado committed 23 of them.
The most costly turnover came with less than 10 seconds remaining when Lyndsy Day picked up a 5-second call.
"We have to be able to play for the last shot," Epps said. "It's as simple as that, and we couldn't do it."
That allowed Lauren Cowher to race down the court and dribble baseline. She tossed up a shot that rolled off of the rim and into the hands of Lindsay Cowher, who swished a 7-foot jumper as time expired.
"Our kids never lost belief and really kept their heads in the battle," Bennett said.
Fox Chapel did a good job keeping Amy Achesinski out of the battle.
The Butler junior forward scored 12 points, but shot only 5-of-12 from the field. On many possessions, the Foxes denied her the ball.
"Our post players deserve a lot of credit for that," Bennett said. "Little Cowher and big Cowher we put on her. We knew we couldn't stop her with one kid. Amy is the best post-player in our section. We kept packing it in on her and got lucky. We got lucky."
Fox Chapel's win has tightened things up in the section.
Butler and Seneca Valley both have two losses and Fox Chapel three in the section.
"We had to have this one," Bennett said. "We really had to have it."
Butler must now find a way out of its first losing streak of the season.
That task will begin Thursday at Pine-Richland — not an easy chore for a team scuffling.
"Hopefully this loss will open up their eyes," Epps said. "This game, we definitely should not have lost. So, now, they should know they can't come in here and play the way they played and expect to win games."
