Wie misses Sony cut
HONOLULU — Michelle Wie changed out of her all-black outfit into a skirt and high heels, a symbolic way to leave the Sony Open after two days — earlier than she wanted, but with her head held high.
She started with a 79, her worst score on the PGA Tour.
She finished by making her seventh birdie of the second round for a 2-under 68, matching her record from two years for the best score by a female player on a men's tour. Still, she was four shots away from making the cut, and the conversation on the 18th ended with words the 16-year-old would like to hear one of these days.
"Play well tomorrow," she told Colombian rookie Camilo Villegas after his 64.
The Sony Open returned to some degree of normalcy with 82 players making the cut — including David Duval, an acceptable start to his year — with some familiar faces atop the leaderboard Friday.
Jim Furyk put his experience in the wind to good use on a blustery day at Waialae with a 3-under 67, giving him a share of the lead with refreshed Chad Campbell, who also shot a 67. They were at 6-under 134.
David Toms paid for some aggressive play early, then settled down with consecutive birdies and shot a 69 to go into the weekend one shot behind. The group at 4-under 136 included Stuart Appleby, who won the Mercedes Championships for the third straight time last week and is in good shape to join Ernie Els as the only players to sweep Hawaii.
