Police chase ends with heroin bust
BUFFALO TWP — Two Butler County men are accused of tossing out bags and bags of heroin early Wednesday morning at the climax of a brief police chase.
Officers did not have to look far before scooping up some 40 stamp bags of suspected heroin near the suspects' sport utility vehicle, Buffalo Township police said.
Steve Selfridge, 27, of East Butler and Lee McKain, 29, of Center Township are charged with possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Selfridge, who also is charged with driving with a suspended license, remains in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $15,000 bond.
McKain is free after posting bail on a $12,500 bond.
The defendants were in the Getgo convenience store on South Pike Road in Buffalo Township about 1:10 a.m. and their odd behavior attracted the attention of employees, according to court documents.
One of the suspects had been in the bathroom for an extended period of time. Police later checked the bathroom and found a syringe on the floor.
Police a short time later spotted the defendants inside a Dodge Durango, which suddenly sped away on South Pike Road.
Officer Timothy Derringer followed the SUV as it swerved off the right side of the road and then back across the opposite lane. The vehicle nearly went off the road three times, police said.
While Derringer chased after the SUV, he saw a "white-colored object" thrown from the passenger side window over a guardrail into a patch of weeds, documents said. The SUV then almost immediately pulled over and stopped.
Saxonburg police officer Kurt Suprano arrived to assist, and found the object that Derringer had seen tossed from the SUV. The object turned out to be a plastic bag containing suspected heroin, documents said.
Police also found a syringe on the driver's side floor of the Durango.
