Jeer:
The vandals who ruined wood siding at the Butler Farmers Market a week or so ago obviously are too immature or shortsighted to consider the full meaning and ramifications of their despicable action.
Unless some individual, group or business comes forward with the resources to repair the damage, presumably resources of this cash-strapped city will have to be mobilized for the fix-up. That means tax revenue of the vandals or someone they know might have to be used to make the repairs.
That money would be better spent to address other city needs, rather than repairs that should not be necessary.
Without any evidence, it cannot be suggested that skateboarders who use the Farmers Market are responsible for what occurred. It is the police department's responsibility to continue its investigation until an arrest or arrests are made.
Regardless of who is at fault, it would not be a surprise if restrictions on skateboarding eventually were imposed at the site. That often is the kind of fallout that occurs when people show such little disregard for community facilities.
Hopefully, police will be successful in solving the crime and paving the way for the vandals to receive the kind of punishment they deserve — including being required to reimburse the city for the cost of materials and manpower needed to make the repairs.
Everyone young or old in the city should be focused on helping their community in any way possible, not tearing it down.
Unfortunately, the kind of immature minds that often are at the root of such damage are incapable of looking beyond their tiny speck of pitiful existence.
