Symphony plans its 'Wonderland'
The Butler County Symphony Orchestra will present its annual holiday concert, "Winter Wonderland" on Dec. 3 in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.
There will be two performances: a matinee at 3 p.m. with open seating and reserved seating at the 8 p.m. performance.
The concert will feature the Slippery Rock University Panorama Steel Drum Band, the Blazing Star Choral Society and photographer Charles Martin.
The steel drum band is a recent addition to the university's musical ensembles.
Featuring a Trinidadian musical genre, the group is composed of 22 members and is directed by David Glover.
The pans used by the group were built by Phil Solomon, Pittsburgh's master pan builder. Two of the members will perform with the orchestra in the performance of Malcolm Arnold's "Commonwealth Overture
."
The entire group will entertain concertgoers in the lobby during intermission.
The choral society will perform "Nanie" by Johannes Brahms. The group has been rehearsing under the direction of Donald Rasely.
Photographer Charles Martin will again present his work as part of the symphony orchestra concert. He began his presentations 24 years ago.
His most recent presentation consisted of photographs of the Civil War battlefields at Gettysburg.
His presentation for the December concert will include PowerPoint projection in his photography for George Chadwick's "Noel" and Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride."
The orchestra also will perform Sergei Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije Suite." There will be both a holiday and a sacred singalong.
