BUTLER TWP — Coach Tony Grenek will be the first person to admit his Butler County Community College men's basketball team has a long way to go.
And the Pioneers' latest step was taken in the right direction.
Keith Wynne scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead BC3 to an 85-64 victory over Jefferson County (Ohio) Community College Wednesday night at the BC3 Field House.
"We've got six players dressing who didn't play in high school," said Grenek. "So it's going to take some time for the team to jell.
"But we're nowhere near where we need to be."
The win came against a Trojans team playing the first game in the program's history.
"It's frustrating when you're trying to get a program off the ground," said Trojans coach Sean Tucker. "It's tough."
But it was the Trojans (0-1) who seemed to be the better team early on.
Jefferson held leads of 13-9 and 16-12 in the first 10 minutes of play.
"We started the game with a trap defense, but they seemed to be breaking it with ease," said Grenek. "That's when we went back to a straight man-to-man and we started to get some turnovers and easy baskets."
The Trojans committed 12 turnovers in the first half, most of them coming after the Pioneers (2-2) switched their defense.
Trailing 23-22, the Pioneers reeled off a 6-0 run in just 44 seconds on two baskets by Wynne and another from Matt Lobaugh that put the hosts up 28-23 with 6:16 left in the first half. They never trailed again.
BC3 led 36-29 at halftime and turned to their ace from the outside early in the second half to continue that momentum.
Jeremy Peterson drained two trifectas in the first 1:50 of the second half to give the Pioneers a 42-31 advantage.
"He led us in 3-pointers last year with 77," said Grenek. "He had some opportunities tonight and got in a rhythm."
With 9:30 left, the Pioneers' lead ballooned to 71-43 and the turnovers continued to mount for the visiting Trojans, who ended the game with 20.
"If we would've had a few more kids on the bench, I think we could have kept the game within 10 points," said Tucker. "But (BC3) is coming down to our place in a few weeks. We've got some work to do before that."
The Pioneers' Ed Beasley tallied 14 points in the win, Lobaugh had a solid performance with nine points and seven boards and Butler High School graduate Bob Freshwater ended with eight points and three rebounds.
BC3 outrebounded the Trojans 39-34.
Jefferson's Dunaysha Lawrence tallied a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while John Lester managed 19 points and nine rebounds.
