The new-prison project hopefully will display better planning than what has come to light regarding the new county communications center.

At a county commissioners meeting Wednesday, the issue of spending additional money for more storage space at the new 911 site was a topic of discussion. Storage space is a basic issue with practically all projects; it should have been adequately addressed before the first shovels of dirt were turned.

While change orders are a common part of construction, the kind of change orders needed reflect on the quality of planning that preceded the start of construction. In this instance, inadequate storage space depicts not enough attention to basic detail.

It's always best to do a job right the first time.
