ROYSE CITY, Texas — A bus carrying 25 high school football players to a game overturned Thursday in suburban Dallas, sending a dozen people to hospitals, officials said.
Television footage showed at least eight players, in their uniforms, lying on the ground and being treated shortly after the accident. Ambulances and helicopters carried the injured to hospitals in Rowlett and Dallas.
Royse City Superintendent Mike Harris said everyone had been able to walk off the bus. He said he thought the helicopter transfers were precautionary.
James R. Willis, 36, one of the team's coaches, told authorities he was rounding a curve when he felt the back wheels lose traction, said Lonny Haschel, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, which was investigating.
NEW ORLEANS — Personal safety concerns might keep team owner Tom Benson from returning to Baton Rouge for New Orleans Saints games.He sent an e-mail Sunday night to NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, saying he definitely would not go back to Tiger Stadium.Benson was taunted by fans and had an altercation with a TV camera crew after the hurricane-displaced Saints' loss Sunday to the Miami Dolphins.Benson called security at LSU's stadium "inadequate to nonexistent," and claimed he and his family "could have all been severely injured or killed."
