KC soccer teams sweep playoff doubleheader

KARNS CITY — The Karns City boys and girls soccer teams both entered the District 9 playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

They showed why on Monday night.

KC's boys overwhelmed Coudersport, 4-0 in a Class A semifinal while the girls ousted a feisty Brookville squad 5-2 in a Class AA affair.

The District 9 finals will look like this:

In the Class A boys title game, Karns City will battle Elk County Catholic. The Class AA girls final has the Gremlins up against Curwensville.

Sites and times for both games will be announced today.

For KC boys coach Roy Parker, the difference in his team's win came on the defensive end.

"Defense has been the difference for us pretty much all season," said Parker. "We are just so strong on that end of the field."

Starting goalkeeper Zach Fleeger made five saves before being relieved by Mike Lopresti with 24 minutes left in the game.

The Gremlins wasted no time getting on top of the visiting Falcons.

Dan Thuronyi beat Coudersport goalkeeper Jeff Notaro with just over two minutes gone from the clock.

The Gremlins continued to attack the Falcons' net, though several scoring attempts were thwarted due to offside calls.

Finally, in the 29th minute of play, Andrew Harmon and Josiah Grubbs had a two-on-none breakaway. Harmon kept possession and scored with ease for a 2-0 lead.

Mark Ferguson also found the net before the end of the half, and the Gremlins led 3-0 at the break.

The Gremlins were forcing Coudersport (12-8) to play a style of game it was hoping to avoid.

"We knew that if we were going to have a chance in this game, it was going to have to be with ball control," said Falcons' coach Brian Empson.

KC (15-3-1) shut down Coudersport's top scoring threat in Sean Mickle.

Though Mickle did end up with his team's best scoring chances, they were all dashed by Karns City's defense and goalkeeping.

"He's been our playmaker all year," said Empson. "He led the team with 31 goals."

Capping the scoring in the second half was KC's Evan Crawford on a penalty kick.

Notaro made 15 saves in defeat.

Just 12 days after defeating Brookville 9-1, it appeared as though the Gremlins again would be on the winning end of a lopsided score.KC received goals from Brittni Grenninger and Kristen Barnhart in the first 18 minutes of the game for a 2-0 lead. That's when the Raiders made a game of it.Brookville junior Aubrey Fenstermaker scored in the 19th minute of play before KC goalkeeper Michelle Sweeney was given a yellow card.Sweeney was forced to leave the game for a penalty kick, which Brookville's Sarah Pierson took and beat backup goalkeeper Kiersten Foreback to tie the game at two."After losing to (KC) 9-1, I just asked the girls that they all give me 80 minutes," said Raiders' coach Jim Confer. "And they did that tonight. They didn't quit."The Gremlins (19-1) refused to go into halftime without the lead, however.Grenninger's shot hit the left post and came right back to Julieanne Scott, who beat a diving Jolayne Cline with 18:49 left in the half.Nikki McElroy scored on a penalty kick later in the period and KC led 4-2 at the break."The difference in the game was at halftime," said Gremlins' coach Joe Meshanko. "The girls just needed to be motivated a bit."Confer had a different view of the break."I actually wish halftime wouldn't have happened tonight," he said. "The girls came off the field and got cold."Indeed, the Raiders (14-8) saw few scoring chances in the final 40 minutes. Sweeney made seven saves on the night, three in the second half.Grenninger scored her second goal of the night five and a half minutes into the second half.Cline made 12 stops for the Raiders.
