Grenninger wrapping up stellar career at Karns City

KARNS CITY — It was just another day at the office for Brittni Grenninger.

The Karns City senior forward tallied two goals in the Gremlins' 5-2 win over Brookville Monday night in the District 9 Class AA semifinals.

Grenninger now has 190 career goals and 91 assists. But numbers aren't on her mind right now.

"I've always wanted to get past the first round of the state playoffs," she said. "It hasn't happened yet and this is my last chance."

The Gremlins will make their eighth consecutive appearance in the PIAA playoffs if they take care of business in the District 9 title later this week against Curwensville.

For Grenninger, her relationship with Karns City's varsity program began before she became a member of it.

"When I was in eighth grade, I played on a U-19 team with a lot of the varsity players," she said. "It was kind of scary playing with the older girls, but it ended up being fun and I learned a lot from them.

"And I watched a lot of the high school team that year."

That was the fall of 2001 — a good time to be watching girls soccer at Karns City.

That's when Leslie Barnhart was a senior forward for the Gremlins. By scoring 79 goals in her senior campaign, Barnhart became the PIAA's all-time leader in career goals with 213.

Asked if she ever dreamt she'd also be nearing 200 career goals, Grenninger exclaimed, "God, no," followed by a laugh.

But the defenses she has victimized over the last four seasons certainly weren't laughing.

Grenninger stepped onto the District 9 soccer scene as a freshman in 2002 a bit unsure of herself. But her natural talent soon took over.

She tallied 35 goals that season.

"I think I've gotten a lot better in front of the net since then," Grenninger said. "During my freshman season, I had a lot of breakaway opportunities that I wasn't able to score on. I'm a better decision maker now."

Her sophomore season yielded 34 goals and 30 assists before she amassed 54 goals and 32 assists last year.

The efforts earned her Butler County Elite 11 All-Star status both seasons.

Opposing teams took notice of Grenninger and did everything to try and stop her.

"I've been double-teamed and triple-teamed in a lot of games," she said. "But I've always had a good team around me and we were able to adjust."

"Brittni is very good at what she does," said Gremlins' coach Joe Meshanko. "She sets a great example for the rest of the team and is a fearless player."

Grenninger recently made a verbal commitment to continue her academic and athletic career at St. Francis (Pa.) University.

The Red Flash compete in the Northeastern Conference (NEC). The team is currently 11-6-3 as it prepares for the NEC Tournament this weekend in Connecticut.

Grenninger received interest from several other schools, including the University of Louisville and West Virginia University.

"My mother has been in and out of the hospital a lot over the last few years," Grenninger said. "She hasn't been able to come see me play much and I wanted to stay close to home."

No matter what she ends up with in career goals, assists and points, Grenninger already knows what the numbers will mean to her.

"It's going to remind me of what an amazing team I was part of," she said. "The numbers are indicative of the players around me and I'm so glad I've had the opportunity to play with them."
