Gremlins grab share of KSAC crown
Wayne Harris scored four touchdowns and the Karns City High football team clinched a share of the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference championship with a 41-18 victory Friday night at Union.
The Gremlins (7-2, 6-1) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after Harris scored on an 11-yard run and quarterback Stephen Black threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Justin Macurak.
Union (0-9) stuck with the Gremlins and were trailing by only nine points at halftime, but the Knights couldn't contain Harris, as Karns City's senior running back added scoring runs of 31 and 2 yards in the second half.
Harris returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score in the second quarter.
"Wayne Harris ran the ball well," said Karns City coach Ed Conto.
But Conto wasn't pleased with some of what he saw against Union.
He shuffled his offensive units in the first half, but went back to his starters exclusively in the second half.
"It was too close," Conto said. "We played lackadaisical. We were a little too sloppy. The kids won an ugly game, but Union did a nice job. They came out and played hard and their backs ran hard."
Karns City had four turnovers and didn't punt in the game.
Union scored two of its touchdowns on big plays. Kolby Davis scored on an 85-yard run and Zach Himes hooked up with Nate Boltz for a 71-yard touchdown pass.
Colton Davis scored the Golden Knights' final touchdown on a 2-yard run.
"We've played much better these last two weeks," Union coach Tom Kidder said. "Our junior varsity won three games, too, so things are coming along.
"Last year, we were at the mercy of our opponents. Teams could score whatever they wanted on us. This year, we were more competitive."
Tom Rainey recovered a pair of Karns City fumbles and Boltz intercepted a pass in the second half.
The Gremlins have a bye in the first round of the District 9 playoffs next week.
