Yellowjackets roll with sweep
Stephanie Leslie had 18 service points and 33 assists as the Freeport volleyball team downed Thomas Jefferson 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 Thursday to advance in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.
"Once you get to the playoff realm, records mean nothing," said Freeport coach Tom Phillips. "Everyone plays with so much heart and emotion."
Marissa DeSalvo added two blocks, four kills and 17 points for the Yellowjackets, who remained undefeated at 19-0 this season.
Before the match, Freeport was given its section-championship plaque.
"That is very motivating," Phillips said.
The key for the Yellowjackets was their serving accuracy. The team misfired on just three serves in the entire match.
Ashley Stover had two blocks, four kills and 17 points.
"To make only three errors is tremendous," Phillips said. "The thing I preach is defense wins games and serving well wins games."
Dana Turley added two blocks and eight kills, Kelly Acre pitched in three blocks and five kills for Freeport, who will play South Park Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
The winner is guaranteed a state playoff berth.
