Seneca picks up 3-0 playoff victory
Ashley Rees, Jess Meurer and Lauren Royal each scored a goal to give Seneca Valley a 3-0 victory over host Ringgold Saturday in their WPIAL Class AAA preliminary playoff game.
Goaltender Aly Intihar picked up the shutout behind a stellar defensive effort.
"We played pretty well, considering the conditions. It was pouring," said Seneca Valley coach Dave Sylvester.
With the win, the Raiders (12-2-4) will play at Upper St. Clair (17-1-1) Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
"We felt we started a little slow (against Ringgold)," said Sylvester. "We'll have to play a lot better Tuesday, probably have to play our best game of the year."
Mount Pleasant 4, Knoch 3 —
The Knights came back time after time but their time ran out in overtime.
Amanda Sharbaugh tallied a pair of goals in less than a four-minute span — the latter with 1:37 left — to tie host Mount Pleasant in this WPIAL Class AAA preliminary game Saturday.
However, the Vikings (15-4) scored off a direct kick about 40 yards away when a header in front of the net went backwards and over the goalkeeper's head for the winning goal.
Knoch coach Amy Travis was pleased with her team's ability to bounce back after falling behind 1-0 early in the game.
"One of our strengths this year was (the Knights) are tough and they do push themselves," said Travis. "They finished the season very strong."
The Knights (12-8-1), who won their last five regular-season games to reach the playoffs, trailed 1-0 before P.J. Abels scored just before halftime to knot the game.
Facing a two-goal deficit, Sharbaugh scored off an assist by Abels with about four minutes left, then followed up with another goal with 1:37 left on an assist by Alex Gordon.
"We played on grass and the field conditions were bad. They played football the night before," said Travis. "I think the conditions took away from the game, but our kids played hard."
