KARNS CITY — Not even a steady shower throughout the game could slow down the Karns City two-team offensive set against A-C Valley Friday.
The Gremlins churned out 251 rushing yards in the first half as they jumped out to a 38-0 lead and cruised to a 45-7 victory in this Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference game.
Karns City (6-2, 5-1) had six different players score touchdowns in winning its fifth consecutive contest.
"I think it worked great. We felt that kept kids the playing hard like that," said Conto of using different skill position players on every other possession.
"We tried to get the younger kids a little experience, and I think we accomplished that," Conto added.
"We dressed 25 kids and our tailback was hurt and our fullback was hurt," said Falcons coach Randy Lemmon. "This week is the team we thought we'd have all year. They had no chance coming in here, but they still played hard."
Karns City scored twice before the Falcons offense even got on the field.
The Gremlins went on a nine-play, 55-yard drive to open the game, the final play being a 28-yard run by Wayne Harris. Steve Black added a conversion run following the score.
The Falcons botched the ensuing kickoff, and Karns City recovered it.
After nine plays, Matt McConnell booted a 34-yard field goal for an 11-0 lead.
After forcing a Falcons punt after three plays, it took the Gremlins just five plays to strike paydirt again, this time on a 7-yard pass to Chad Bell from Black.
Touchdown runs by Joey Everetts (25 yards), Stephon Conto (12) and Black (27) helped the Gremlins to open the 38-0 lead entering halftime and the mercy rule would be in effect the for second half.
The Falcons did rush for 78 yards in the first half. Their best chance to score came when they drove down to the Gremlins' 25. But on third-and-3, quarterback Brad Rembold was intercepted by Black to end the threat.
The Falcons did score in the third quarter when, after recovering a Karns City fumble at its own 34 yard line, A-C Valley went on an 11-play, 66-yard drive.
Hank Heeter caught a 22-yard pass from Rembold in the end zone with 1:45 left in the quarter.
The drive was kept alive when Rembold connected with Ryan Wadlow for a 29-yard pickup on a third-and-10 at the Falcon 45.
The Gremlins closed out the scoring when Justin Macurak scored from four yards out with 10:56 left.
The Gremlins finished with 394 yards rushing, led by 110 yards from Everetts and 99 more from Harris.
Rembold completed six of 17 passes for 83 yards, although he had a few drops in the game.
"He had six interceptions in the first game and I told him, 'Don't worry. You'll keep throwing,'" said Lemmon.
"We had so many balls hit kids in the chest. ... You have to hold on to the ball if you want to move up to another level."
Notes:
the Gremlins are in a first-place tie with Clarion and Clarion-Limestone. All three teams have 5-1 conference marks. The Gremlins will face Union next Friday, Clarion is at Moniteau and Redbank Valley will be at C-L.
