Redbank runs over Moniteau

NEW BETHLEHEM — People who follow horse racing know that a horse that runs better in sloppy conditions is called a mudder.

The label mudder might apply to Skyler Smith after Friday night.

Smith, the 5-foot-8, 155-pound senior, rushed for 293 yards and had scoring runs of 78, 64, and 83 yards on a sloppy field to lead Redbank Valley to a 38-14 victory over Moniteau.

"He's done it all year, and he's done it his whole career," said Redbank Valley coach Ed Wasilowski. "We knew if we could get him through a nine-man line, he could break one."

Redbank opened the scoring at the 6:44 mark of the first quarter when Bulldogs quarterback Brandon Doverspike plowed into the end zone from the 1.

The short touchdown run capped a drive that lasted more than five minutes and covered 70 yards.

After Moniteau was forced to punt on its first possession, Redbank Valley linebacker D.J. Mohney blocked the kick and the Bulldogs took over at the Warriors' 28-yard line.

However, the Bulldogs fumbled the ball on the ensuing play and Chris Pisor recovered for Moniteau at his own 32.

Redbank scored again with 1:43 left in the opening frame when Smith took the handoff and raced up the right sideline for a 78-yard score.

Smith added his second score with 8:18 left in the first half by racing through the Warriors' defense for a 64-yard touchdown.

The Warriors cut the Bulldogs' lead to 18-7 at halftime when Adam Cousins caught a 25-yard pass from Garth Kohlmeyer that deflected off of the fingertips of Moniteau wide receiver Jerrod Patterson.

Moniteau got good field position for the score when Cousins returned the punt to the Redbank Valley 25-yard line.

Kohlmeyer completed 7 of 14 passes for 93 yards and the lone touchdown.

"That should give us a little bit of confidence in our passing game," said Moniteau coach Steve Wilson. "That should help us down the road because teams will not be able to put nine guys in the box to try to stop our running game."

Redbank Valley scored again on its opening drive of the second half when Doverspike threw a screen pass to Nick Johnston, who raced 55 yards through the Moniteau defense for the score.

Doverspike completed three of five passes for 85 yards and two scores.

Smith scored his final touchdown of the night with 4:43 left in the third quarter when he raced up the right sideline for an 83-yard score.

The Redbank Valley defense held Moniteau to 115 yards rushing on 37 carries.

"We had them off balance," said Wasilowski. "I thought we were one step ahead of them all night defensively."

Moniteau needs a win at home against Clarion next week to make it into the District 9 playoffs.

"I asked the kids, 'Do you guys want to go to the playoffs or not?' And they all said yes, so I hope that carries into next week," said Wilson.

"These kids are chomping at the bit to get another crack at Karns City and have another game with (Redbank Valley) on a dry field," added Wilson.
