Big night for QB

Monteleone racks up 431 yards in Butler win

BUTLER TWP — Nick Monteleone: A fantasy football player's dream.

Butler's junior quarterback rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns, threw for 189 yards and two more scores as the Golden Tornado defeated Seneca Valley 47-29 Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

"Yeah, this was a career night for me — so far," Monteleone said.

"I'm amazed, but I'm not amazed," Butler coach Garry Cathell said. "Nick's been putting up big numbers all year.

"I remember his first game last year against Kiski when he looked like a young player. This was his 19th start and now he's a dominant high school quarterback."

The win snapped a six-game losing streak for Butler (3-6, 1-6) while the Raiders (1-8, 0-7) dropped their seventh straight game overall and 20th consecutive Quad North contest.

Butler also claimed the Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy for a record third consecutive season.

"That means a lot to these kids," Cathell said.

The Tornado took a 14-0 lead in the first half. Eric Petanovich sacked Seneca Valley quarterback Kevan Smith at the 1-yard line, forcing a punt from the end zone to set up the first score.

Monteleone found Jordan Roycroft for 32 yards on a post pattern, then scored on a 3-yard run to cap a two-play, 35-yard drive.

Jade Burka sacked Smith to end the Raiders' next series and a 13-yard punt gave Butler possession at the SV 39-yard line. Monteleone capped a four-play drive with a 9-yard scoring toss to Roycroft.

Nate Bradley, who had 22 carries for 113 yards and three touchdowns, scored on an 11-yard run for Seneca Valley and the Raiders trailed only 14-7 at halftime.

But every time Seneca Valley scored, Monteleone and the Butler offense found a way to answer.

On the second play of the third quarter, Ben Ashcraft took a handoff from Monteleone and ran 74 yards for a touchdown. It was the first time Monteleone handed the ball to a running back all night.

The Tornado had a 20-7 lead, but nearly lost it.

Bradley's 10-yard scoring run polished off a 67-yard drive for the Raiders. On the next series, Seneca Valley's Shane Patsilevas returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown that appeared to tie the game.

A pass interference penalty on the play said otherwise. And on the next play, Monteleone ran 52 yards for a touchdown.

"That was the turning point right there," Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle said. "A 14-point swing, momentum — everything. I thought our kid made a nice play on the ball.

"But I'm not the guy walking around with a flag in my pocket."

Bradley's third touchdown — a 6-yard run — pulled the Raiders close again, but Monteleone took control from there.

The quarterback scored on a 50-yard run, threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Petanovich and scored on a 48-yard run.

"He's the best quarterback I've seen in our conference," Butschle said. "To do what he did in these conditions is pretty incredible."

Rain steadily fell during most of the game.

When told of Monteleone's 242 rushing yards, Butschle replied: "That's embarrassing to our defense."

Butler rushed for 323 yards on the night. The Tornado entered the game with 577 yards rushing all year.

"The last couple of games, we felt we could get something done with Nick running the ball," Cathell said.

"Our game plan was no different tonight than it has been," Monteleone said. "We're a passing team. Two of my touchdowns were on scrambles, two were on designed plays."

The two teams combined for 797 yards and 38 first downs Friday night.

"You give up 40 points per game, you're not beating anybody," Butschle said. "That's what we have to address."

Notes:

Seneca Valley's Kevan Smith threw for 133 yards and a touchdown. … Butler will play its final game at Norwin. Originally listed as a Thursday game, it may be moved to Friday. … Seneca Valley will close its season Thursday at Fox Chapel.
