Double their pleasure 4-2 win over

Butler gives Raiders section title

JACKSON TWP - The desired result seemed simple enough.

A win or a tie against Butler Monday would give the Seneca Valley boys soccer team the Section 2-AAA title.

A loss to the Golden Tornado, and the two Butler County schools would tie for the crown.

It didn't take the Raiders long to grab control, however.

R.J. Case scored just 2:05 into the game to help Seneca Valley jump out to a four-goal lead on its way to a 4-2 Senior Night victory.

Seneca Valley (13-3, 11-1) and Butler (17-3, 9-3, section runner-up) await their playoff matchups at Wednesday's pairings meeting.

"That was a huge boost for us to get the early goal," said Seneca Valley coach George Williams, who said he believes the section title is the first for the boys program.

"It puts (Butler) on the defensive and knew they had to come back and at least tie," Williams added.

Case scored in front of the net off a direct kick, placing the ball in the right corner.

"To give away a goal early is disappointing," said Butler coach Chuck Kelley, "but to accomplish what we did ...

"People thought we might do well, but after two or three years at the bottom of the section, to challenge for the section title is a huge tribute to what the kids have done," Kelley added.

The Raiders doubled their lead when Bobby Albrecht scored off a deflection by Shane Kunder on a corner kick by Tyler Smith with 8:25 left in the half.

Slightly more than one minute into the second half, Kevin Miller made it 3-0 when he took Smith's hard grounder off a corner kick and buried a shot past Butler goalie Tim Duffy.

Kunder scored off a Steve Staniland assist with 34:02 left to give the Raiders a 4-0 advantage, but Butler answered just 38 seconds later when Taylor Blose kicked a soft lob over Raiders goalie David Monteleone to put the Tornado on the board.

With 7:22 left, Butler's Wade Grubbs squirted a shot in front of a crowded net past Raiders backup goalie Mike Krysinski to give the Tornado some momentum.

Monteleone returned less than two minutes later and made a spectacular save off an Andy Schnur shot, pulling the ball down with one hand to preserve the two-goal lead.

"Seneca Valley played their typical game and capitalized on their chances," said Kelley. "That's what good teams do. They were able to put it away."

The four goals allowed by Butler were the most this season. The previous high was two.

"Sometimes when you play, everything goes in. This was one of those nights," explained Williams. "We've been on the other end before."

Notes:

Monteleone made eight saves and Duffy had 12. … North Allegheny finished third and received the final section playoff berth.
