SV offense wakes up in defeat of Butler

JACKSON TWP - Dave Sylvester had seen enough.

The Seneca Valley girls soccer coach watched his team go three consecutive games without scoring a goal.

Finding the net was not a problem for the Raiders Wednesday night.

Forward Cassie Berlin tallied three goals as Seneca Valley made an early two-goal lead stand up in a 6-1 defeat of rival Butler on senior recognition night at Raiders Stadium.

It was the Section 2-AAA finale for both teams.

"I thought we played well tonight," said Sylvester. "And we needed this. Going three straight games without scoring, we worked on a few things in practice (Tuesday)."

The extra work paid off.

In the tenth minute of play, Jessica Meurer took a pass from Courtney Leon and booted a shot from 15 yards out that beat Butler goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers.

Just 45 seconds later, Berlin scored her first goal of the night, sticking the ball between the left post and a diving Rodgers for a 2-0 advantage.

Butler's offense got off to a slow start, but by the mid-point of the first half, the Golden Tornado was getting scoring chances of their own.

During the 23rd minute of play, Butler's Jamie Albert beat two defenders and was charging toward SV's net.

But the senior left the ball a bit too far in front of her on her approach and Raiders' goalkeeper Aly Intihar pounced on it before Albert could get off a shot.

A few more scoring chances went awry for Butler and it trailed 2-0 at the break.

"The scoring chances, they were there for us tonight," said Butler coach Marlene Peoples. "But we just didn't finish."

Berlin scored for the second time just 48 seconds into the second half, this time on an assist from Ashley Rees.

Rodgers tallied 12 saves before being replaced by Ashley Oluschak early in the second half.

Though Oluschak would go on to tally seven saves in just over 32 minutes of play, the Raiders would go on to tally three more goals against the backup goalkeeper, one each by Leon, Berlin and Veronica Pecora.

Intihar ended the night with 13 saves.

She missed getting her fifth shutout in six games when Butler's Karilee Cowan scored on a penalty kick with just over four minutes left to play.

The Raiders (9-2-4, 8-1-3) had already qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.

Butler (10-5-1, 6-5-1) could have made postseason play with a win and either a loss or tie by North Allegheny, which played North Hills.

After beginning the section schedule with a 2-3-1 mark, the Tornado went 4-1 before Wednesday's game to get back into the playoff hunt.

"The girls have worked really hard, coming back from a few early losses this year," said Peoples.

Both teams will next play on Saturday. Seneca Valley travels to Franklin Regional while Butler will host Norwin.

Seneca Valley's seniors include Cassie Berlin, Tara Dohn, Aly Intihar and Ashley Rees.
