Black Hawks rule Butler
BETHEL PARK - The Butler football team missed its opportunity to take the lead in the second half.
Bethel Park didn't.
After the Tornado's Chris Haley sent a 31-yard field goal attempt wide right with 7:24 left in the third quarter Friday night, the host Black Hawks put together a 15-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to snap a 14-all tie.
They added another late score to post a 28-14 victory. Butler's loss, coupled with North Allegheny's win over Seneca Valley, ended the Golden Tornado's WPIAL playoff hopes.
"We'll work just as hard," Butler coach Garry Cathell said. "Nobody in this locker room is going to quit. This won't change anything."
Cathell wished he could change an official's call, however.
After Butler's Marcus Hough recovered a Bethel Park fumble at the Tornado 42 to end the first possession of the second half, the Tornado drove downfield. Quarterback Nick Monteleone connected on passes of 15 and 27 yards to Nate Hartung and Jordan Roycroft, respectively.
On third-and-9 from the Bethel 14, Monteleone tried hitting Cory Haley, who was cutting across the middle of the end zone, but the pass was incomplete.
"They tackled our kid (Haley) on that play and we don't get a call," Cathell said. "I mean, that was ridiculous.
"If we score a touchdown and go up seven right there, the whole second half is played differently. I know it's one play … but it was a huge play in this game."
Butler's errant field goal attempt followed, and the Black Hawks (6-1, 4-1) took possession - and kept it for a while.
Bethel Park converted three third downs and a fourth down on its way to the go-ahead points. On fourth-and-5 from the Butler 24, quarterback Jeff Stewart rolled right and found Brian Warholak along the right sideline for an 11-yard pick-up.
Warholak was knocked out of bounds on the play and didn't get up. Medical personnel immobilized his head and he left the field on a stretcher.
"It was a helmet-to-helmet contact thing," Bethel Park coach Jeff Metheny said. "He was moving his arms and legs OK. … It was more precautionary than anything else, at least I hope that's all it is."
Justin Pratt, the Black Hawks' leading rusher who didn't play in the first half, scored on an 8-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to cap the drive. Bethel Park kept the ball for 7 minutes, 29 seconds on the possession.
The Black Hawks kept the ball for 16:34 of the second half, compared to Butler's 7:26.
"Justin was hobbled a bit this week and we wanted to hold him out," Metheny said. "But when our fullback went down, we needed him."
Pratt had only six carries in the game. Fullback Jon Enyeart moved to tailback and had 24 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Stewart had 11 carries for 117 yards and threw for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Butler (2-5, 0-5) had a chance to draw even when Shane Snyder recovered a fumble and returned it 23 yards to the Bethel 39, but the Tornado offense went three-and-out with 9:31 left in the game.
Butler went three and out on its following possession and punted with 5:25 left. Enyeart then iced the win with a 14-yard scoring run, capping a nine-play, 65-yard drive.
"It's frustrating," Cathell said. "I've got great kids and they work so hard. … We're so close."
Bethel used scoring drives of 80 and 88 yards to take a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Haley intercepted a pass with 4:56 left in the half to quell another potential Black Hawk threat.
Monteleone set up his own 12-yard scoring run with 2:31 left by completing a 27-yard pass to Andy Strutt.
Haley's squib kickoff bounced off a Bethel Park blocker and Roycroft dove on the loose football. Monteleone romped 44 yards to score on a quarterback draw and the game was even at halftime.
"Our kids were OK at halftime," Metheny said. "We executed and made plays when we had to in the second half.
"We had to switch to more of a base defense to contain Monteleone. He's as good a quarterback as we've seen."
Bethel Park had 13 second-half first downs to Butler's three before the Tornado began their final possession with 1:35 left in the game.
Eric Bielich intercepted a fourth-down pass from the Bethel 21 with seconds remaining.
Butler travels to Mt. Lebanon next Friday.
