Missed Opportunities

Errant kicks cost Golden Tornado

BUTLER TWP - Chris Haley has kicked nine field goals this season.

He wishes he had made a couple more Friday night.

Butler failed to convert on short field goal attempts that would have won the game in regulation and in overtime before North Allegheny quarterback Adam Neugebauer tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Billy Knight, handing the Tigers a 27-24 double-overtime victory at Art Bernardi Stadium.

"That ball seemed to be in the air for 15 minutes," Tigers coach Art Walker Jr. said of the winning pass that spoiled Butler's homecoming. "This was that type of game."

Haley's late-game field goal attempts couldn't get up in the air.

With the game even at 21, Butler (2-4, 0-4) gained possession at the North Allegheny 40-yard line with 2:27 left in regulation. Nick Monteleone's 21-yard pass to Cory Haley moved the ball inside the 15.

After two running plays gained nothing, Butler called its final timeout with 16.7 seconds left and coach Garry Cathell sent Haley out to attempt a 30-yard field goal.

When the snap sailed over holder Andy Strutt's head, Haley alertly dove on the ball at the 21-yard line. The Golden Tornado tried lining up for a fourth-down kick, but time expired and the game went into overtime.

"Sure, we wished we had another timeout," Cathell said. "But we had to use two earlier in the game. We can't second guess that."

Butler won the coin toss for overtime and went on defense first. The strategy paid off as Alex Tatangelo intercepted a second-down pass.

Again, the Tornado ran the ball twice up the middle before sending Haley out for a 25-yard field goal to win the game. A Tiger defender got his hand on the kick and it fluttered to the ground a few feet in front of the crossbar.

Walker burned his timeouts before both field goal attempts.

"You can't take them home with you," he said. "That kid is awfully good and we were going to do everything we could to throw him off."

Haley had connected for field goals of 24 and 37 yards earlier in the night. He was wide left from 30 yards after a high snap on the final play of the first half.

"If I can get a game to come down to Chris Haley kicking the football, I'll take it every time," Cathell said. "I'd make the decision to set up every one of those kicks again if I had the chance.

"My confidence hasn't waned in those guys at all. That's an outstanding group and they've been there for us all year."

Walker defended Cathell's decision to go with the field goals.

"You have to let the game rest on that kid's foot," he said. "He's the best (kicker) around."

Butler took possession to begin the second overtime. NA's T.J. Guthrie sacked Monteleone on third down and Haley drilled a 31-yard field goal to give the Tornado the lead.

But on the second play of NA's possession, Neugebauer found Knight in the left corner of the end zone.

"Their defense checked down on (leading receiver Nick Henderson) and that left one-on-one coverage on Billy," Walker said. "Adam saw it, threw it and Billy went up and got it."

"Our kids played so hard," Cathell said. "They left it all on the field, and that's where you're supposed to leave it. I'm proud of my team."

The Tigers (2-4, 1-3) opened a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, putting together scoring drives of 59 and 71 yards. Henderson caught a 54-yard touchdown pass for the second score.

Haley's 24-yard field goal capped an 11-play, 72-yard Butler drive and got the Tornado on the board. Butler drove 68 yards in the final 30 seconds of the first half, only to miss a field goal to close the half.

Dan D'Amore recovered a fumble of the second-half kickoff to give Butler possession near midfield, but the Tornado went three and out.

Butler's Regan Young recovered a North Allegheny fumble midway through the third quarter and Monteleone hooked up with Strutt for a 27-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

A conversion pass to Noah Hartung knotted the game at 14.

North Allegheny regained the lead on a 62-yard touchdown pass to Knight, which Butler nearly intercepted, with 11:07 left in regulation.

Monteleone guided the Tornado downfield again, scoring himself on a 1-yard plunge to cap a 12-play, 80-yard drive with 4:17 remaining. Monteleone completed a 19-yard pass to Jordan Roycroft on third-and-19 from the NA 20-yard line to highlight the drive.

"He's a tall kid with a pocket presence you just don't see from a high school quarterback," Walker said of Monteleone. "He was bouncing out of the pocket, looking off receivers, going to his second or third receiver - he was giving us fits."

Eric Petanovich sacked Neugebauer for a 16-yard loss to force a Tiger punt with 2:27 left. The Tigers shanked the punt and Butler gained possession at the NA 40, but failed to take advantage.

Monteleone threw for 270 yards on the night. Strutt had 113 yards receiving and Roycroft had 107.

"This one hurts, but we still have time to get things done," Cathell said. "We're getting Bobby (Alexander), Marcus (Hough) and Randy Craig back next week and that will help.

"Our kids will come back. They'll be ready Saturday to get back at it again."
