BC3 hosts 1st art show for senior

BUTLER TWP - Butler County Community College will host an art exhibit by Thomas Boyd in the Lawson Board Room gallery space from Monday through Oct. 28. An opening reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Thomas Boyd of New Castle, 82, will be displaying 23 of his traditional watercolor paintings at BC3 during October.

While Mr. Boyd has been painting for many years, this is the first solo exhibition of his work. Painting in a traditional transparent watercolor technique, his subjects range from landscapes and florals to wildlife themes.

Boyd credits studying with Jocelyn Beatty of the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle as being a major influence in his approach to painting.

His winter landscapes convey the crisp, clean areas of an experienced watercolor painter while his floral pieces display the subtle washes that are unique to the medium.

David Ludwick, BC3 fine arts faculty member and a former director of the Hoyt Institute, remembers Boyd as being one of the most accomplished of the previous generation of watercolor painters who were very active in the New Castle area.

"I was pleased that BC3 had the opportunity to present this first solo exhibit of Tom's work; it's long overdue," Ludwick said.

Boyd and his wife live just north of New Castle. He continues to paint at his home. Boyd served in both the 8th and 9th Air Force units during World War II.
