Over the hump
BUTLER TWP - The Seneca Valley girls volleyball team has had trouble winning two games in a row this season.
In a Section 3-AAA affair at Butler Tuesday night, the Raiders took a huge step toward shedding that dubious label.
After winning Game 3 for a two-games-to-one lead on Butler, the Raiders fell behind 14-8 in the fourth contest.
That's when several players stepped up their play to make sure a fifth game wouldn't be needed.
Danielle Diamond, Chelsey Pavlick and Justine Carrow all came up with kills and Beth Copp served up an ace as SV grabbed a 15-14 advantage.
Butler forced a sideout, but it didn't hold serve for long as another Diamond kill brought the ball back to the Raiders.
With solid team play in front of her, junior Angela Heagy tallied six consecutive service points for a 22-15 lead.
Jen Boyd's kill stopped a late Butler rally, as the Raiders claimed a 25-15, 24-26, 25-10, 25-20 victory.
"Late in the match, the girls became more consistent and more competitive," said Seneca Valley coach Heather Haff. "We've struggled to win two games in a row this year."
"The difference tonight was that we couldn't execute the fundamentals," said Butler coach Meghan Lucas. "Other than that, I don't know what else to say."
Pavlick tallied 14 kills, including eight in the final game.
"She's one of the girls with experience from last year," said Haff. "We're definitely counting on her to lead the team, especially in kills."
Carrow added eight kills and three blocks for SV.
Turning in strong performances in the loss were Butler's Abby Herrit with 14 kills and Amy Achesinski, who had 11 kills and three blocks.
The Golden Tornado's lone victory came after a comeback in Game 2.
Butler (3-6, 1-4) found itself down 17-11 after 14 service games, but Achesinski, Herrit and Emily Huey provided much needed kills either to hold serve or to take it from the Raiders down the stretch.
With her team leading 25-24, sophomore Katie Willison ended the game in style with an ace and Butler had pulled even at one game apiece.
"During the second game, we played the way we're capable of playing," said Lucas. "That's what happens when all the girls believe in themselves and are out there playing hard."
The Raiders (4-3, 2-3) retaliated with a decisive 25-10 win in Game 3. SV built a 14-7 lead and the Golden Tornado were able to hold serve for just two points the entire game.
Even with the victory, Haff knows her team still has to improve.
"We've got a lot of young girls on this year's team," she said. "Our battle right now is to keep them mentally sharp throughout an entire match."
The Raiders also prevailed in the junior varsity match, 2-1.
