Knoch tops Mars for section tennis title

Knoch's Chelsea Gibson and Tiffany Allen defeated Katrina Erdahl and Christie Hansen of Mars 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 Tuesday to claim the Class AA, Section 3 girls tennis doubles championship.

Both duos now await the seedings for the WPIAL championships, which will be held Monday at a site and time to be determined.

At the WPIAL section doubles tournament at North Allegheny High School Tuesday, Butler's No. 1 and No. 2 teams won their first-round matches before losing in the second round.

Butler No. 1 team of Courtney Kerr and Angela Byrns defeated North Hills' No. 2 team of Emily Fritsch and Emily Fidago 10-2 before falling to Pine-Richland's No. 1 tandem of Sarah Lynch and Kelly Robinson 10-2.

Butler's No. 2 team of Kristin Cypher and Maggie McGinnis downed Pine-Richland's Bridgette Loiselle and Marla DePaolis 10-6, but dropped a 10-4 decision to North Alleheny's No. 2 team of AnneElise Wilson and Liz Lampe.

Butler will return to match play action today at Pine-Richland.

Singles victories by Alicia Double, Melanie Sessa and Rachel Wilson helped the Tornado (5-6) to blank the Royals.
