Gremlins survive fantastic finish
KARNS CITY - All you needed to see from Friday's Karns City football game against Keystone was the fourth quarter.
And you didn't want to miss a minute of it.
All of the scoring came in the final 10 minutes, and the contest wasn't decided until an extra-point attempt by Keystone's Alex Rowan's with two seconds left sailed wide and sealed the Gremlins' 14-13 Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference victory.
"We've been averaging 14 points, and that's what we needed," said Karns City coach Ed Conto. "In the first half, we had no field position, and if we did, we gave it back. In the fourth quarter, we got it and kept it."
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Keystone punter Derek Swartzfager gathered in a bad snap and decided to run, but he was tackled for a 1-yard loss, giving the Gremlins the ball on the Keystone 23.
Four plays later, Karns City's Wayne Harris broke free for a 12-yard touchdown run with 9:32 remaining for the game's first score.
Keystone responded with a 13-play, 66-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Justin Bifano with 3:36 left.
Karns City calmly answered, as Harris opened the drive with a 10-yard run, then quarterback Steve Black ran for 15 yards. An additional 15 yards for an out-of-bounds hit on the play gave Karns City (2-2, 1-1) the ball at the Keystone 30.
On third-and-7 from the 27, Harris ran for nine yards for a first down.
Joey Everetts followed with runs of 6, 7 and 2 yards before Harris capped the drive with a spinning 3-yard run with 38 seconds left. Matt McConnell's second extra point of the night made it 14-7.
Following the kickoff, which put Keystone (1-3, 1-3) at its own 32 with 31 seconds left, Bifano threw incomplete before he hooked up with Mike Switzer, who was the team's starting quarterback, on three consecutive plays.
After catches of 21 and 31 yards, Bifano found Switzer on a 16-yard scoring pass in the end zone with two seconds remaining.
"I felt we needed a change," said Panthers coach Jason Nellis on inserting Bifano at quarterback. "Mike was not playing bad, but I wanted to look for a spark."
After a Keystone timeout, Rowan's kick sailed left and the Gremlins escaped with the win.
"(Our defense) bent, but it didn't break," said Conto. "Am I happy with the yardage we gave up? No, but we held them when we had to.
"We tried to do a lot to give that game away. I heard someone say that you need to win a game when you play bad," Conto added.
Swartzfager rushed for 130 yards on 25 carries to lead all rushers, and Bifano passed for 68 of his 78 second-half yards on the final drive.
'We've got to curb the penalties, the turnovers, the bad snaps. We couldn't execute," said Nellis.
"I told the guys after the game not to lay down. If you can execute, you'll be in every game."
The win was the Gremlins' first in the KSAC and could help spur the team the rest of the way.
"Right now, we're moving the ball, but not scoring. We are not a big-play team," said Conto. "We didn't play hard in the first half and made more mistakes. Hopefully the team will learn from that."
Notes:
Harris led the Gremlins ground game with 68 yards. … Black did not complete a pass in the game, going 0 for 8.
