Burrell too strong for Yellowjackets
Freeport suffered its third consecutive football loss Friday night, falling to Burrell 48-14.
The Yellowjackets (1-4) defense struggled all night, giving up 19 first downs and 510 yards of total offense. In fact, the Yellowjackets failed to stop Burrell at all.
Burrell scored on every offensive possession of the game, and Bucs coach Tom Henderson credits the success of the offense to the his line.
"The O-line has been solid all year long," Henderson said. "You know, you read all the time about the backs and the receivers. Without those guys up front, those guys wouldn't have anything."
Freeport started the game off well by scoring on its first possession.
The Yellowjackets managed to earn four first downs and gain 71 yards on the opening drive of the game, which was capped with a 24-yard run by junior quarterback Bryan Zimmerman.
"They (Freeport) ran that drive very well," Henderson said. "I gotta admit, I was nervous as could be coming into this game. We played horribly last week and we didn't have a really good week of practice."
Burrell reached the scoreboard for the first time on a 9-yard run from senior wide receiver Steve Carney.
Burrell capitalized on its very next drive as well, when sophomore quarterback Seth Napierkowski connected with senior running back Tyler Henderson, who carried the ball down to the Freeport 3-yard line before fumbling it into the end zone.
Senior wide receiver Brian Smith flopped on the ball, scoring Burrell's second touchdown as time expired in the first quarter.
Burrell started to pad its lead in the second quarter, when senior wide receiver Ryan Ruckus dashed 29-yards to paydirt. This brought Burrell's lead to 21-7.
The Bucs wasted no time and put yet another score on the board as Henderson poked the ball in from 1-yard out with 57 seconds remaining in the half.
Burrell came out strong in the second half by scoring on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Napierkowski to senior wide receiver Aaron Brown.
Senior running back Ryan Walker widened the margin for Burrell by jamming in another score from 1-yard away, bringing the score to 42-7 with 5:55 remaining in the third period.
Freeport managed to score its second and final touchdown in the third quarter. Sophomore running back Kirk Naedele capped off a 10 play, 78-yard drive with a 1-yard surge.
Burrell capped the scoring when Brown scored his second touchdown of the game on a 33-yard scamper around the left side of the Freeport defense.
"We made good adjustments and played really hard tonight," Henderson said.
Freeport coach Bill Dillen could not be reached for comment.
