Storm of offense
JEFFERSON TWP - Nothing seemed to be able to slow the Knoch or Keystone Oaks offenses during Friday's Greater Allegheny Conference football game.
Then, Mother Nature decided to give it a try.
With the game tied at 21 with 2:59 left before halftime and lightning still in the forecast 90 minutes later, the game was postponed until 3 p.m. Saturday with Knoch having a first-and-10 at the KO 14-yard line.
Keystone Oaks' John Fuhrer had amassed 106 yards on 15 carries in the game and a pair of scores while Alex Whisler scored twice for Knoch, including taking the opening kickoff 91 yards.
The Golden Eagles responded when Brad Francus took an indirect snap on a fourth-and-1 at the Knoch 35 and scampered in to tie the game.
The Knights punted on the ensuing drive before the Eagles embarked on an 11-play, 90-yard drive, capped by a 6-yard run by John Fuhrer with 2:13 remaining in the quarter for a 14-7 lead.
Not to be outdone, the Knights also had some fourth-down success.
On a fourth-and-3 at the KO 43, quarterback Jordan Shoop broke through the line, then broke free for a touchdown to knot the game at 14 with 11:12 left in the second quarter.
The Knights' defense then held the Eagles to three plays and a punt, which Joel Berger returned 22 yards to the KO 21-yard line.
Whisler scored on the next play to give Knoch the lead with 9:11 left before halftime. Ben Wetzel added his third extra point of the evening to make it 21-14.
Keystone Oaks answered with a nine-play 45-yard drive that ended when Fuhrer scored on a 1-yard run. The drive was sustained when quarterback Chris De Francesco completed a 9-yard pass on a fourth-and-3 to give the Eagles first and goal at the Knoch 6.
Roman Nardozi also kicked his third extra point to the force the third tie of the contest.
With Knoch starting on its own 20 and 4:51 remaining, Whisler had runs of eight, seven and six yards, with a personal foul penalty by Keystone Oaks mixed in.
Facing a second-and-6 at the KO 44, Shoop connected with Eric Farmer down the middle for a 30-yard pickup and a first down at the KO 14 before lightning forced both teams off the field.
The game will be picked up at that point Saturday.
Notes:
De Francesco completed 5 of 6 passes for 57 yards for the Eagles. Whisler led the Knights with 64 yards on seven carries.
