C-L downsKC in OT
STRATTANVILLE - For 48 minutes, Karns City and Clarion-Limestone went toe-to-toe.
And it still wasn't enough.
Lions quarterback Scott Davis threw a 70-yard scoring strike to Kaleb Klosky in overtime and their defense held the Gremlins out of the end zone in the extra frame to give C-L a 24-16 high school football victory Friday night.
"Really, it was Scotty's athletic ability that won the game for us at the end," said Clarion-Limestone coach Todd Smith. "The way he was able to scramble around back there and make people miss, he did a nice job."
Davis, a 5-foot-8, 153-pound junior, accounted for 227 yards of the Lions offense.
Midway through the first quarter, the Gremlins (1-2, 0-1) had the ball at their own 31-yard line when quarterback Stephen Black threw a pass that deflected off C-L defensive back Matt Hetrick and wound up in the arms of Lions linebacker Jesse Zahoran.
Three plays later, the Lions capitalized on the turnover when David Brooks plowed into the end zone from two yards away.
On its next possession, Karns City marched the ball to the C-L 30-yard line.
However, Gremlins tailback Brett Green was stopped short on fourth and eight, turning the ball over on downs.
C-L (3-0, 3-0) marched 70 yards in just five plays with Davis running a quarterback sweep around left end for a 14-yard touchdown.
Karns City got on the scoreboard on the third play of the second quarter when Joey Everetts tackled Brooks in the end zone to give the Gremlins a safety.
Midway through the third quarter, Karns City cut the Lions advantage in half when Black threw a 72-yard bomb to Justin Switzer.
Black threw for 148 yards on 7 of 16 passing.
The next time the Gremlins touched the ball, they marched 80 yards on 19 plays.
The drive was capped off when Green rumbled six yards over the right side to knot the score at 16-16.
On the drive, the Gremlins converted three fourth downs, including the touchdown.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Gremlins had the ball at their own 36-yard line when Black threw an interception to Brooks at the Karns City 49-yard line.
Brooks then pitched the ball to Davis, who returned the interception to the Gremlins 25.
C-L was held without a first down and attempted a 33-yard field goal.
However, a bad snap forced Davis to miss the kick.
In the overtime period, Karns City moved the ball to the 4-yard line, but Black's fourth-down pass missed the mark.
"I told my team, when you can not play your best and still win the football game, that comes down to heart," said Smith.
"We definitely didn't play our best tonight, there are things we have to improve, but my hat goes off to Karns City, they played a heck of a game," Smith added.
"I'm proud of our kids, they gave a great effort," said Karns City coach Ed Conto. "Our kids had a rough week. We had to cut a player from the team this week, but they came out and didn't let that (bother) them."
