Butler catches this eagles eye
Just call me a fair-weather flyer.
My lone mis-fire in my debut of predicting local football games last week was Butler's 24-14 win over Kiski Area.
The Golden Tornado's defensive play surprised me - and sold me. I'm reversing my field this week.
Here's how I, Scoop, the exceptional eagle, the boisterous bird, the unflappable flyer, sees this week's action:
Butler vs. Hempfield at Heinz Field - Like I said, the Tornado impressed me on defense. It may feed on Hempfield mistakes tonight and I doubt Butler's offense will commit five turnovers.I'll be soaring around Heinz Field. The penalty flags won't be.
BUTLER, 23-8.Kiski Area at Seneca Valley - I'm giving the Cavalier boys another chance, only because I'm not sold on the Raiders' defense. But Seneca Valley will score enough to keep this close.Kevan Smith and Pat Prazer jump-started a Seneca Valley offense that was dormant at times last year. But can Kiski quarterback Mychal Skinner be contained two weeks in a row?
KISKI AREA, 23-21.Knoch at Moon - Two of the better quarterbacks around do battle in this one. The difference will be Moon knows how to win showdown-type games while the Knights are learning how to do so.
MOON, 19-15.Clarion-Limestone at Moniteau - An early test for both teams, but the host Warriors have more experience, more depth and more size. C-L may score on a couple of big plays, but it won't stop Moniteau's physical attack.
MONITEAU, 28-13.Mars at Center - The Planets showed a lot of offensive balance last week in a tight loss to Pine-Richland. D.J. Cannon threw for 188 yardsand Paul Ferrese rushed for 135.Shore up the defense a bit - and coach Scott Heinauer takes pride in his defense every year - and that will turn into a tight win this week.
MARS, 21-16.St. Marys at Karns City - Sure, the Gremlins have low numbers this year, but they're still high in quality. I was almost extinct, good football at Karns City isn't.
KARNS CITY, 23-13.Slippery Rock at Fairview - The Rockets are going to need a couple of weeks to develop and having to travel close to Erie to open the season won't help. Neither will having to face Ty Perry, who rushed for 1,800 yards last year despite not cracking the lineup until midway through the season.
FAIRVIEW, 24-17.Freeort at McGuffey - The Yellowjackets lost, but looked solid against Knoch last week. Give up only 14 points and you'll win most games you play … unless you're Penn State, I suppose.McGuffey will struggle to find the end zone twice this week and Freeport's offense will improve.
FREEPORT, 20-10.Slippery Rock University at Youngstown State - Even though Penguins can't fly - such inability would drive me nuts - they don't lose to Slippery Rock. YSU is coming off consecutive losing seasons and returns a lot of talent with a lot of experience. The Rock is smarting from a disappointing second half at Bloomsburg. SRU may fatigue in the second half and Youngstown State will be pumped for its opener.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE, 39-21.Scoop's other selections: Cambridge Springs over Union, 21-16; Clarion over A-C Valley, 37-10; Grove City over Harbor Creek, 28-12; New Brighton over Summit Academy, 27-8; Manchester over Grove City College, 27-13.
Last week: 5-1
Season: 5-1
