On the losing end

Yanks can't beat Tampa Bay; Royals can't beat anybody

The Kansas City Royals haven't won a game in three weeks. It's been 11 months since the New York Yankees took a series from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Royals lost their club-record 18th straight game Wednesday and moved within three of matching the longest skid in American League history with an 11-5 loss at Seattle.

"This is tough," Kansas City's Jose Lima said. "This is something we didn't plan. Nothing is going our way right now. I'm embarrassed to go into a bar. The people would say, 'They lost 18 in a row. They really stink this year.'"

The Yankees probably feel just as bad after a 7-6 loss at Tampa, their second straight one-run defeat to the last-place Devil Rays.

The Yankees, 0-3-1 in series against Tampa Bay this season, wasted opportunities to pull within 3½ games of first-place Boston in the AL East and to tighten the AL wild-card race, which finds them trailing Oakland by 1½ games.

"It's frustrating. This is where you really have to earn your money," manager Joe Torre said. "Things aren't always going to be wonderful, because then it would be easy to play this game. You really have to fight your way through times like this."

Manager Buddy Bell rejoined the Royals after a two-game absence while attending burial services for his Marine nephew, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq earlier this month.

Bell returned to the dugout and watched the Royals get closer to the AL record of 21 straight losses set by the Baltimore Orioles at the start of the 1988 season.

Tampa Bay's Alex Gonzalez homered and drove in four runs and Jonny Gomes snapped an eighth-inning tie when he scored on Tanyon Sturtze's wild pitch.

At Oakland, Calif., emergency starter Eric DuBose (1-0) didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, and Baltimore sent the A's to their fourth straight loss by completing a three-game sweep.

Craig Monroe's two-run double highlighted host Detroit's five-run first off David Wells (9-6).Rangers 3, Indians 0At Cleveland, Rookie Chris Young (10-7) allowed two singles in eight shutout innings, helping Texas snap an eight-game losing streak.

Johan Santana took a no-hitter into the seventh, and visiting Minnesota completed a three-game sweep of first-place Chicago and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Orlando Hudson and Vernon Wells broke open a tie game with consecutive RBI singles, helping Josh Towers (10-9) win his fourth straight road decision.

At Miami, pitcher Dontrelle Willis used a five-hitter and a two-run double to help Florida beat San Diego.

Jeff Francoeur homered, tripled and threw out another runner from right field to lead Atlanta. Andruw Jones hit his major league-leading 38th homer.

Nomar Garciaparra homered one inning before leaving the game with a stiff lower back, and starter Carlos Zambrano homered and went 8innings for visiting Chicago.

Jon Lieber (12-10) pitched six strong innings and Bobby Abreu hit a two-run double for Philadelphia, which moved into a tie with Houston atop the NL wild-card race.

Noah Lowry pitched a season-high 8innings, and drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run for San Francisco.

Mark Mulder threw a five-hitter for his second shutout of the season and John Mabry hit a two-run homer for St. Louis (76-44), which passed the Chicago White Sox (74-44) for the best record in the majors.

Milwaukee's Chris Capuano (13-8) allowed six hits over seven innings and drove in both runs with a bases loaded single in the second.
