Sharpen those skills at Lenape

New, expanded classes offered

FORD CITY - Lenape Tech, a comprehensive technical school just 30 minutes from Butler, has been serving the needs of the community and industry since 1965.

The Adult and Continuing Education Program offers a host of evening and Saturday classes, providing a variety of learning opportunities.

In addition to licensed practical nursing, classes are offered in a variety of fields, including trade and industry, computers, medical technology and alternative therapies.

Lenape has something to offer for those who are interested in improving their workplace skills, exploring a new career or personal direction, or just to have fun. The majority of its instructors bring real-life experiences to the classroom.

Certification and Act 48 credits for teachers can be awarded for certain programs, and others can lead to certification or can give the student the opportunity to explore a new career without a large cost.

Businesses often need customized classes for their employees. Lenape has the capability to address the needs of businesses which need to upgrade workers' skills or to prepare workers for entry-level positions.

Several classes, including welding, CNC machining basics, motor vehicle seminars, advanced notary training, pharmacy technician training and advanced Microsoft XP have been added or expanded to meet the needs of the students. Medical office assistant and medical transcription are two certificates that have been improved by adding several classes to the basic component.

If you are re-entering the workforce, Lenape is introducing a math class to brush up on skills and a business communication class to introduce oral and written skills. The class also will include an introduction to basic interviewing skills and guidelines for written and e-mail correspondence.

The LPN program is the only program of its kind in Butler and Armstrong counties.

The demand for LPNs remains strong. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the job outlook for LPNs through 2012 is good with a projected increase of 10 to 20 percent. The need is even stronger in nursing care facilities and nursing homes with a 21 to 35 percent employment growth expected.

There are benefits to both the full-time and part-time programs. The full-time practical nursing program enables students to enter the workforce after one year of clinical and classroom training. The part-time program provides students the opportunity to maintain a job while obtaining their degree.

The program also provides an excellent foundation for students to continue their education toward advancement in the nursing profession.
