Larouche wins Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
PRESTO - Pierre Larouche tapped in a par putt on the final hole Sunday to win the Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational for the second straight year.
"I putted great," Larouche said at the event at the Club at Nevillewood in suburban Pittsburgh. "I made pretty much everything I looked at."
Larouche, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens, was in a battle with four-time champion and former major-league pitcher Rick Rhoden until the very end.
"Rick played great and he had a bad break on No. 18 when he hit the wrong club, but we played great," Larouche said. "That's the bad thing in golf, just like all other sports, one's got to lose and today I won."
It took a huge effort to do so.
Larouche came into the day three points behind Rhoden under the modified Stableford scoring system in use at the tournament, but blistered his home course for 34 points to finish with 81. His score in relation to par was a 7-under-par 65, including a 5-under-par 31 on the front nine, while Rhoden finished at 4-under-par 68 and 78 points.
"If someone would have told me this morning that I would make nine birdies and it would come down to the last putt on 18, I would say there's no way in the world," Larouche said. "You get breaks during the game and I did all day."
Larouche took home a trophy and a $40,000 first prize.
HARRISON, N.Y. - Jim Furyk watched in disbelief as Padraig Harrington's long eagle putt tracked perfectly toward the hole and disappeared into the cup."I don't remember what exactly I was thinking," Furyk said. "There's probably a couple of four-letter words in there somewhere. ... I was a little stunned."Harrington's curling 65-foot eagle putt on the final hole gave the Irish star a one-stroke victory Sunday in the Barclays Classic."I was just trying to two-putt. Trying to get it down there close," Harrington said. "I'm a total realist in those situations. ... If you'd offered me 3 or 4 feet, I probably would have said, `All right, I'll take that.'"Harrington took advantage of Furyk's late meltdown in the 90-degree heat at sun-baked Westchester Country Club for his second PGA Tour victory this season, overcoming a three-stroke deficit with five holes to play.Harrington closed with a 1-under 70 for a 10-under 274 total. The nine-time European tour winner won the tournament a year after losing a playoff to Sergio Garcia in his first appearance in the event.
