Catherine N. Atwell, 88, of Butler died Thursday.

Born in Butler, July 29, 1916, she was the daughter of Marion L. and Genevieve Adams Nicholas.

Mrs. Atwell was a member of Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church and had served two terms as a church trustee.

She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star 45 of Butler, where she was a matron and district deputy. She was a life member of the American Contract Bridge League and a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She is survived by a daughter, Catherine A. Gresh and her husband, Ric L. Gresh, of Barrington, R.I.; a son, Jacob Clinton Atwell and his wife, Donna Sloan Atwell, of Renfrew; and a sister, Mrs. Jeanne Lee Nicholas Infield and her husband, Harold B. Infield, of Laurenberg, N.C. Also surviving are two grandsons, Tyler Jennings Gresh and Jameson Atwell Gresh, and six nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, former Butler County Coroner Jennings Clinton Atwell, and a brother, Marion "Bus" Adams Nicholas.
