Help wanted

BUTLER TWP - The urgency isn't there now, but the Butler High School athletic department will have a busy end to 2005.

The Golden Tornado have five coaching openings to fill: baseball, softball, swimming, girls lacrosse and boys tennis.

Since those sports all compete in the winter and spring, there is no rush to fill them immediately, Butler athletic director Tim O'Malley said.

Still, that's a big turnover.

The biggest position is baseball, where Ron Zawrotuk served as coach since the 1999 season. It was his second stint running the baseball program. He also served from 1983 to 1993.

But his second stint wasn't nearly as successful as his first. Butler struggled most of his seven years as coach, bottoming out this season as the team went just 3-16.

The Golden Tornado did win their last two games under Zawrotuk, but it wasn't enough to keep his position from being opened.

Zawrotuk could not be reached for comment.

"Ronny Zawrotuk is a good man and a good baseball man," O'Malley said. "He's done everything we've asked him to do. But we haven't won enough baseball games."

Butler softball coach Tanya Schnur and girls lacrosse coach Julie Baccanti both resigned, O'Malley said.

The Butler softball and girls lacrosse teams each won only one game this season.

The school also is opening the boys tennis position held by Aaron Wilf.

Wilf makes long commutes to and from the tennis court and is not a teacher in the district.

Former Butler swimming coach Amber Schmeider is leaving to take a teaching position in Palm Beach, Fla.

"Amber has been so good for us and our program," O'Malley said. "We appreciate everything she has done."

Schmeider is a certified teacher, but the Butler school district was unable to find a teaching position for her.

She will teach at a middle school in Florida, but will not coach - yet.

"The middle school doesn't have a program," Schmeider said.

Schmeider said she will help O'Malley find her replacement if needed.

"We discussed it briefly," Schmeider said. "I told him I would help him if he needed it."

O'Malley said anyone interested in applying for the coaching vacancies should send a letter of interest and a brief coaching resume to the Butler Athletic Office, 120 Campus Lane, Butler, Pa. 16006.
