Corry pitcher grounds Eagles

MEADVILLE - The Grove City softball team couldn't figure out how to hit Corry pitcher Allison Hasbrouck.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, that problem had to happen in the District 10 Class AAA championship game.

Hasbrouck pitched a complete-game one-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks to lead the Beavers to a 6-1 victory Wednesday at the Lincoln Avenue Softball Complex.

Hasbrouck allowed an infield single to Kari Barnes with two outs in the fifth inning.

"We knew she had good speed," said Grove City coach Sue Greaves. "She does move the ball, but we didn't see her 'rise' ball.

"Seven strikeouts, that's out of the ordinary for us," Greaves added.

"Allison did a great job," said Corry coach Dale Henderson. "When she started struggling with her fastball, she went with her other pitches.

"You like to see your pitchers have zero, one or two walks a game. She's a strikeout pitcher," Henderson added.

Corry (19-2) got to Eagles pitcher Krista Chiappini early, using three singles in the first inning, the latter two never leaving the infield.

Corry opened up a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Jessica Beattie's RBI triple drove home Bridget Minnick, who reached on a one-out single. An error by Chiappini brought home Minnick on a grounder by Larissa White.

Corry had three consecutive singles to open the third inning, but Eagles catcher Tara Walmsley threw out her second runner of the game trying to steal to help diffuse the rally.

Minnick's double to open the fourth helped pave the way for a 4-0 Beavers lead.

Beattie popped out to third baseman Emily Robinson, who made a diving catch in front of the Grove City dugout.

Minnick decided to tag to third base, but Robinson's throw from the ground sailed high and Minnick trotted home.

"We really brought the sticks," said Henderson. "Our girls really hit well. They were excited about this game. They had a lot of confidence."

Grove City (14-6) finally scored in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit.

Ali Gomola walked, then reached second on a delayed steal. A fielder's choice moved Gomola to third base, then a wild pitch by Hasbrouck brought her home.

A fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly brought home two Corry runs in the fifth inning for a 6-1 lead.

Grove City also chipped away at the deficit when, with two outs, Barnes singled and Kait Moretti reached base on an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but Hasbrouck induced Steph Blakley to pop out to end the threat.

With the loss, Grove City will not advance to the PIAA playoffs since only the champion advances beginning this year.

Still, the Eagles had a strong run, erasing a 2-4 record by winning 12 of 13 before losing to Corry.

"When we came back from our first region game, we started to jell," said Greaves. "These girls had a new coach, were moved up to Triple A, a new region.

"When we went up and beat Oil City 10-0, they thought they could beat anyone. When we beat Meadville 2-0 (in the D-10 semifinals) no one thought we could win.

"We had some good pluses and we have a good group coming back next year. … I told the girls that we'll come back here next year and win it," Greaves added.

Notes:

Corry was the defending District 10 champion. Last year, they won the Class AA title and defeated Grove City in the semifinals. … The Eagles will lose four seniors from this year's squad: Gomola, Chiappini, Robinson and Anne Yetter.
