Grove City captures District 10 baseball title
Grove City's third District 10 baseball championship in six years was simply a walk through the park.
A walk through Critchfield Park, that is.
The Eagles took advantage of nine walks and some clutch hitting to defeat General McLane, 14-4, in Monday night's district championship game.
Scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, the game was delayed an hour by rain.
"Our kids were still ready to play," Grove City coach Pat Forese said. "They were excited to be playing."
Third baseman Bill Herman denied McClane the lead in the top of the first inning by fielding a ground ball, stepping on third and throwing to first to complete a double play.
The game was tied at 1 in the bottom of the second inning when Bob Revesz stroked a run-scoring double to highlight a three-run frame for the Eagles.
"Their pitcher was really struggling with his control," Forese said. "It was at that point we settled down and decided to wait him out."
Losing pitcher Aaron Skalko walked nine in just four innings of work.
Herman delivered the crushing blow in the third inning, a bases-loaded triple to highlight a six-run inning and give Grove City a 10-2 lead.
Herman had three hits and five RBI in the contest.
Grove City reached the district title game by posting a 4-1 semifinal win over Franklin Saturday night in Erie.
Andy Geibel allowed five hits and struck out five batters in six innings to get the win.
