Sticking together

SV pair heart and soul of lacrosse team

One's job is to score goals while the other aims to stop them.

Peet Poillon and Rob Beauseigneur, respectively, have perfected their crafts for the Seneca Valley boys lacrosse team.

Both players are four-year starting seniors on a Raiders team that is currently 14-4 heading into its Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Division I first-round playoff game today.

They were freshmen on the 2002 squad that finished 4-8 in Division III and have been cornerstones for the program as it rose to Division I, the top level of the WPSLA.

"Team chemistry doesn't get any better than what we have," said Poillon. "We're all best friends and I think that has a lot to do with the success we've had.

"We went from being one of the bottom three teams in the league to one of the top three," Poillon added.

Poillon, a midfielder this season who also has seen significant time as an attacker over the last three years, currently leads the team with 58 goals and 60 assists.

He recently scored his 400th career point.

That milestone was soon followed by All-America honors.

The WPSLA consists of

teams. Only five players from the league received All-America status this season.

"We've got records going back 10 years, and as far as we can tell, Peet is the league's all-time leading scorer," said Raiders coach Wayne Jaeckle.

Poillon has been a scoring threat since his freshman year, tallying 23 goals that season.

He garnered all-section honors his sophomore year, second team all-league honors last season and undoubtedly will be named to the first team for 2005.

"It's the work I've put in over the last few summers that has made the difference for me," Poillon said. "I've gone to at least two camps every summer and last year, I played in three tournaments."

"He has such a desire to win," Jaeckle said. "It's a desire that most high school players never get."

Opposing defenses have tried to slow Poillon down, but they've done so in vain.

"Almost every team we play will stick their best defender on him," said Jaeckle. "But the more teams try to contain him, that just gives him more motivation to beat them. He thrives on that kind of challenge."

Beauseigneur began playing lacrosse in eighth grade, at which point he was a midfielder.

He was named the starting varsity goaltender his freshman season by then-coach Ken Sines.

"Playing with varsity-caliber players instead of junior varsity, it really helped me to improve my game," said Beauseigneur. "As the team got better, I got better."

Beauseigneur has attended several goalie camps over the last few years to further strengthen his game.

Poillon has seen Beauseigneur in action many times in practice.

"He can shut down anybody in the league," said Poillon. "When Rob's on, it picks the whole team up."

"He's got a great work ethic," said Jaeckle of his goalie. "He always practices hard and never gets injured. I'm convinced if it wasn't for Rob, we'd still be playing in Division II."

Poillon (2002, 2004) and Beauseigneur (2003) have accounted for the Raiders' last three team MVP awards.

"The other players on the team know that with Peet and Rob, we've got a world of talent on our side," said Jaeckle.

Both plan to play in college.

Beauseigneur was recruited by Division II St. Vincent College and will dress for the Bearcats next year.

Poillon plans to attend a junior college before transferring and playing lacrosse at a Division I school.

First things first, however. And that begins today.

"I think everybody on this team has a goal of winning a Western Pennsylvania championship," said Beauseigneur.
