Rock falls to losers bracket
Rain delayed the North Atlantic Regional baseball tournament Thursday - but it only delayed the inevitable for Slippery Rock University.
The Rock trailed top-seeded and tournament host West Virginia State 13-1 when rain forced the game to be completed Friday. SRU wound up suffering a 14-3 loss to fall into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
The Rock's Rocky D'Angelo took the loss, allowing 10 runs and 10 hits in 2
innings. Zachary Baldwin started and pitched all five innings Thursday for West Virginia State, striking out seven to run his record to 10-0 on the year.
Chris Tolliver had three of SRU's eight hits. Mat Kozusko added two hits and Knoch graduate Chase Rowe had a double for The Rock's lone extra-base hit.
Ryan Taylor, Jon McDowell and Justin Gray each homered to spark West Virginia State's 17-hit attack.
The Rock will send four representatives to the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday through Saturday at Abilene Christian University in Texas.Sophomore Tony Carr has the fourth-best qualifying mark in the men's javelin at 220 feet, 5 inches. Junior Calista Shoaff has the 10th-best mark in the women's javelin at 142-8.Senior Bill Jordan, a Grove City High graduate, ranks 12th in the men's decathlon with a season-best total of 6,624 points.Senior Kristen Jones ranks 21st in the women's 100 meters with a time of 12.3 seconds.In other action:At the ECAC Championships in Springfield, Mass., Erin Claxton placed second in the 5,000-meter run Friday with a time of 17:39.07 to highlight 10 Grove City College athletes taking part.That time provisionally qualifies Claxton for the NCAA Division III Championships next weekend.Freshman Bob Rummel, a graduate of Knoch High School, competed in the 110 high hurdle preliminaries, placing 12th with a time of 15.5.
