Current, former IUP football players charged in bar brawl

INDIANA, Pa. - Three Indiana University of Pennsylvania football players and one former player were charged for their role in a bar fight that police said escalated into a riot.

Police said the players became upset when an employee wouldn't admit a friend to the bar May 5, and began punching the worker, Travis Miller.

Linebacker Kirby Griffin of Rochester and wide receivers Joe Slappy III of Midland and Javon Hines of Bridgeville were charged. Former player Peter Smith of Pittston, also was charged police said Wednesday.

University spokeswoman Michelle Fryling said Smith, who would have been a sophomore next season, is no longer on the team or enrolled at the school, but declined to say why.

Griffin is also accused of punching another worker.

"Certainly this is the kind of behavior we don't condone," Fryling said. The school plans to hold disciplinary hearings for Slappy, Hines and Griffin, she said.

The players were charged with aggravated assault, causing a riot, simple assault, and harassment.

Efforts to contact the players and coach Frank Cignetti through the sports information department weren't successful.

A bar security camera recorded the fight and Fryling said the university is cooperating with the borough police investigation.

Smith and Griffin were among 16 current and former IUP students, including 11 football players, who were charged in a February brawl at an off-campus house.
