Moniteau girls win 1st track title
It's been a long time in coming for the Moniteau girls track and field team.
With its 97-49 victory over North Clarion on Tuesday, the Warriors (9-0) clinched what is believed to be the first conference title in the program's 35-plus years.
"The program started sometime in the mid-to-late 1960s, and we have records going back to the early '70s," said Moniteau coach Sue Scialabba. I don't know of any other year in which (Moniteau) girls track won a conference title."
Haley McFeaters led the way with three victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash events.
Kendra Hall (shot put and discus) and Amy Gladd (800 run and triple jump) were double-individual winners.
On the way to the 2005 KSAC crown, the Warriors' toughest opponent was their short roster.
"We had just 20 girls come out this year," said Scialabba. "And, with injuries, we were usually down to 18 or so at meets.
"But we've got quality girls. That's what made the difference."
In the boys meet, Moniteau's 102-48 defeat of North Clarion was highlighted by the 1,600-relay team's school record time of 45.2 seconds.
The quartet included Ed Miller, Zack Thompson, Eric Hilliard and Vance Farren.
