Field rules the day

But Butler loses title to Tigers

WEXFORD - If it was only the Butler girls' field team competing, the squad would have won hands down.

As for the track part, that was a different story.

The Tornado, behind Kendall Butch and Tara Maxwell, won five of the seven field events at Monday's WPIAL Class AAA team championships at North Allegheny High School.

That wasn't enough as Butler beat Canon-McMillan 78-72, but lost to Norwin 82-68 and champion North Allegheny 95-55.

The North Allegheny boys also won the Class AAA title, defeating Latrobe, Baldwin and Upper St. Clair, the latter by a narrow 80-70 score.

"We had some nice things happen," said Butler coach Rod Harris. "But a lot of girls were not ready and a lot of girls are doing other sports.

"Track is taking a back seat to other sports like soccer and basketball," he added.

Harris was asked to leave the stadium late in the meet when he protested an impromptu 10-minute break by the meet supervisor that was enforced without conferring with the other head coaches at the event.

There were only two track events, the 3,200 and 1,600 relay, remaining and no prior notice was given.

Still, Butch and Maxwell were golden for Butler as Butch captured the pole vault (11 feet), triple jump (37-2) and high jump (5-4), and Maxwell won the shot put (40-1) and discus (125-1).

"Kendall's triple jump was a heck of a jump. That 37-3 was a (personal record)," said Harris. "Kendall's potential is unlimited.

"Tara's throw in the shot put was her second-best ever and the 125-1 is a new PR for her. That should put her second on our all-time top-five list."

Emily Chiappini tied Butch in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, but placed second. Harris also was impressed with Maria Baroffio's in the javelin (99-4).

"(Baroffio is) PRing in every meet," said Harris. "That's perfect timing for the (WPIAL) qualifiers Wednesday (at Butler)."

Despite the third-place finish in the WPIAL team finals, Harris already is optimistic about next season.

"A positive note was getting back here to the finals," said Harris. "Last year was a rough year, but we built the team, we got back and we look forward to being back here next year."
