Freeport's Conjack verbally commits to RMU

When it came down to choosing a college, Kiel Conjack made a business decision.

Of course, football will be part of the mix.

Conjack, a senior at Freeport High School, has made a verbal commitment to play football at Division I-AA Robert Morris University.

He was also considering Seton Hill and Davidson (N.C.).

"It's a well-known business school and football is also appealing," said Conjack, who holds a 4.3-plus grade point average at Freeport, where he is ranked among the best in his class.

"It's hard to find that combination with the business aspect. It made it a good choice for me," Conjack added.

Conjack brings versatility with him to the Colonials' program. He can play wide receiver, quarterback and defensive back, which he did with equal aplomb for the Yellowjackets.

"Kiel has speed and quickness and I think he can play at that level," said Freeport football coach Bill Dillen, who is also Conjack's track coach.

"He has speed and quickness and a knowledge for the game. He can also throw the ball and that adds another dimension," Dillen added.

As a senior, Conjack caught seven passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 34 of 75 passes for 514 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions and also rushed for two more scores, but was named to the first-team Butler County All-Star squad as a defensive back.

Primarily as a receiver his junior year, Conjack pulled in 24 passes for 644 yards (26.8 yards per catch) and had six touchdowns and was selected as an all-county first-teamer at the position.

Conjack made the move to quarterback as a senior to help make up for the loss of Luke Westerman, who graduated.

Conjack was given some time back at receiver as Brian Zimmerman was worked in as a signal-caller.

At Robert Morris, Conjack is anxious to play quickly, but knows he might have to wait.

"They asked me where I wanted to play and I said wide receiver, but I can also play defensive back," said Conjack. "I like wide receiver. I like making plays on offense."

One thing Conjack does know is he won't be running track.

"I want to play football," said Conjack. "I don't want to lose my focus from football. It'll be tough just with football."

Another appeal of Robert Morris is its successful history, having nine winning seasons in its 11-year history. The Colonials have won the Northeast Conference title five times and two mid-major national crowns.

Colonials' head coach Joe Walton, along with assistant coaches Dan Radakovich and John Banaszak, bring along a lot of National Football League experience to the program.

"I want to go there and do the best I can and see how it all falls out," said Conjack. "I'm not expecting playing time my freshman year, but I'm not expecting to sit."
