A welcome surprise
ADAMS TWP - Setting a record was the last thing members of the Seneca Valley girls 400-relay team were thinking about as they prepared for the race.
Surprise, surprise.
The Raiders' quartet of Da'Lynn Mills, Aly Triscuit, Logan Gamelier and Carrie Wack finished first with a mark of 50.7 seconds, breaking the meet record at the Mars Track and Field Invitational Friday.
The previous mark of 50.89 was set last year by Burrell.
"We weren't even thinking about coming out and breaking the record," said Wack, who ran the anchor-leg of the race.
Her three teammates echoed Wack's surprise.
The quartet's time was just shy of its best mark of 50.4.
"They were just (three-tenths) of a second from getting it," said Seneca Valley coach Wayne Roccia. "There's a few small things they can improve on, but I'm very pleased with the effort."
SV's girls finished in third place in the team standings with 34 points.
Leading the host team's effort was Brittany Zaborowski, who took first place in the 800-meter run at 2:21.91.
She passed several competitors in the last 150 meters to defend her title from last year.
"A lot of people say that's the best way to do it," she said. "Stay right behind three or four people and then make a late push, because running in the lead is always tough."
Knoch's Sarah Reppermund (pole vault) and Freeport's Lacey Cochran (400) won their respective events.
Reppermund, a senior who holds the school record in the pole vault at 10 feet, nine inches, managed a 10-6 Friday.
"She just missed 11 (feet) today," said Knoch coach Tom Hoffmann. "And she was using a pole that she's not used to. But her confidence is pretty high right now and that's what you want heading into WPIAL qualifiers and, hopefully, the finals."
Cochran set the record in the 400 run in 2003 at 58.3.
The senior's final chance to break her own mark yielded a 58.56 - good enough for first place. She also finished second in the 200 run (26.1).
On the boys side, Karns City's Mark Ferguson won the 300 hurdles in 40.67 while Seneca Valley's Justin Nock took the high jump with a personal best mark of 6-4.
Knoch's Kory Bottles won the boys field MVP award after earning a second-place finish in the triple jump (43-¾) and a fourth-place mark in the long jump (20-4¼).
Freeport's boys finished in third place in the team standings with 38 points.
The Yellowjackets received several fine performances, which included Shane Sarver's second place in the 1,600 run (4:27) and fourth place in the 3,200 (9:48.66).
Brady Sherrieb did his part by taking third in the long jump (20-4½) while Kiel Conjack was second in the 300 hurdles (40.68) and Bryan Zimmerman was second in the javelin throw (164-9).
Other notable efforts included:
