It's a breeze Tornado easily top Hampton

BUTLER TWP - Not long after the Butler-Hampton track and field meet had concluded Thursday, Golden Tornado girls coach Rod Harris turned his eyes to next week - and a date with Seneca Valley on Monday.

"It's going to be a bloodbath," Harris said, smiling. "They beat us here last year. It's going to be a good one. It's going to be something."

But first, the Butler routed Hampton 117-33.

The boys also won handily, 105-45.

Harris used the meet against the Talbots to rest some key competitors and to give some of the young pups a chance to shine.

And they did.

Sophomore Hannah Rekich won both the 100 and 300 hurdles and first-year athletes Abby Herrit, Jess Vernon and Haley Spinneweber turned in big performances.

Herrit, a junior out for track for the first time, won the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 1.6 seconds. Vernon, also in her first year, won the 1,600-meter run.

Spinneweber placed second in both the long jump and triple jump.

"We were able to rest some people and have some of our other girls score some varsity points," Harris said.

The usual suspects turned in top-notch performances as well for Butler.

Tara Maxwell dominated the throws, winning both the shot put and the discus and Kendall Butch set a personal best mark in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches.

Butch also won the pole vault with an 11-foot effort as Butler took the top three places in the event, which has become a regular occurrence for the Golden Tornado.

"That's a huge confidence boost for us," Harris said. "When we go onto a meet, I write down (an 8-1 score) for the pole vault. Most of the time it is 9-0."

But Butch is the dominant force in the event. She went to the PIAA Track and Field Championships last season and has become even more determined to succeed this season, Harris said.

"Kendall is really focused," he said. "She did (12-7) in the indoor season and her goal is to clear 13 feet. She eats, lives and breathes the pole vault."

It was hard, though, not to think about Seneca Valley looming on the horizon.

The two teams will enter the meet 5-0. The Raiders already have beaten North Allegheny and Butler will square off against the Tigers April 26.

"We've had it circled for a long time," Harris said of the meet against Seneca Valley. "We put several more circles around it after they beat NA."

The Butler boys track and field team also was able to give some of its top performers some much-needed rest and to give some of its injured athletes a chance to heal.

"We have a lot of guys banged up a bit with hamstrings and quads," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "But young Matt Celestin did a nice job and so did Adam Bell and Doug Moran.

Celestin won the triple and long jumps and Bell was second in both events.

Moran, running in the injury-ravaged sprinting events for Butler, won the 200 with a time of 23.8 and placed second in the 100 in 11.3.

Butler's top three sprinters, Luke Renwick, Fred Pinto and Mike Golec are injured. Pinto is out for the season.

Junior Dunn moved into second place in the WPIAL in the javelin with a throw of 184-11.

Like the girls, the Butler boys (5-0) are looking forward to the match-up with Seneca Valley.

"Seneca Valley is a very talented team," Schontz said. "Hey, it's the backyard brawl. For us, it's the playoffs. If we beat them, it guarantees us a spot."
