LOS ANGELES - Former NFL defensive lineman Al Lucas died Sunday from a presumed spinal cord injury sustained while trying to make a tackle for the Los Angeles Avengers during an Arena Football League game, the team said.

Lucas was pronounced dead at California Hospital after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, team physician Dr. Luga Podesta said in a statement. An autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday, the county coroner's office said.

The 26-year-old Lucas was injured during a first-quarter kickoff return against the New York Dragons.

The 6-foot-1, 300-pound lineman played two seasons (2000-01) for the Carolina Panthers, making 491/2 tackles in 20 games.

Butler native Matt Clement received his second successive no-decision of the season Sunday for the Boston Red Sox.Clement allowed six hits and three earned runs in Boston's 4-3 loss at Toronto. He struck out six, walked five and hit a batter.

LINKOPING, Sweden - The United States beat Canada 3-1 in a penalty shootout to win the Women's World Hockey Championship on Saturday, ending the defending champions' run of eight straight titles.Natalie Darwitz, Angela Ruggiero and Krissy Wendell scored for the Americans after regulation and a 20-minute overtime ended 0-0. Sarah Vaillancourt scored Canada's goal in the shootout, the first in championship history.The United States finally won the title after losing all eight previous championship games to Canada.

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - Lindsay Davenport's powerful serve helped her offset 36 unforced errors and beat Silvia Farina Elia 7-5, 7-5 Sunday to win the Bausch & Lomb Championships for the second consecutive year.She joined Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabatini as the event's only three-time winners.
