Raiders drill KC girls, 16-0

CHICORA - Just when Karns City started to make good contact against Brookville pitcher Jen Shaffer, it was the Raiders who finally came to life.

The Gremlins trailed 1-0 through three innings, but Brookville scored five runs over the next two innings and put the game out of reach with a 10-run outburst in the sixth inning Tuesday to post a 16-0 girls softball victory.

"We took too long to come alive," said Brookville coach Greg Fenstermaker. "Not to make excuses, but what hurt us was we played Bellefonte (Monday) and faced a pitcher who threw over 60 miles an hour.

"It's tough to get adjusted, but once we did, we were able to hit the ball," Fenstermaker added.

Shaffer, an Indiana (Pa.) University recruit, limited the Gremlins to four hits, striking out 10 and walking none.

She struck out the side in the first and fourth innings and had eight Ks during that span.

Brookville (1-1) loaded the bases against Gremlins starter Erika Fallecker after two outs in the first inning, but the sophomore was able to escape without any damage.

The Raiders broke through in the second inning when Heidi Confer had an RBI single.

Confer and Kasay Snyder lined back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth to highlight a three-run inning to stake Brookville to a 4-0 lead.

The Gremlins finally picked up a pair of hits against Shaffer in the fourth inning.

A one-out double by Jessica Spafford and a two-out single by Shannon Christie put runners at the corners for Karns City, but Haley Callihan struck out to end the inning.

"We started to put the bat on the ball," said Karns City coach Mike Simpson. "We were so close, but you can tell we're a young team."

The Raiders tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a wild pitch and a subsequent error on the throw back to the plate.

The Gremlins threatened again in the fifth when Jocelyn Bishop opened with a single. With one out, Ashton Pakutz hit a grounder, but Bishop was safe at second on the throw.

A fielder's choice to first base placed runners at second and third with two outs, but Brookville center fielder Carlie Cook made a running catch to end the inning.

"If Ally gets that ball down, we get rolling," said Simpson. "They had her played perfectly."

In the sixth inning, the Raiders sent 15 batters to the plate.

Carlie Cook had an RBI single and two-run single, Caitlin Cook had a two-run single and Shaffer added an RBI single to lead the way. Brookville also benefited from five walks in the frame.

The Gremlins had one more shot to plate a run in the sixth inning when Marissa Evankovich had an infield single with one out and Christie reached on an error.

Callihan and Jocelyn Bishop each grounded into a fielder's choice to close out the game.
