SV eyes strong performances
JACKSON TWP - Stacie Safritt's winning four district titles in the four events she competed in earlier this month might seem like a hard act to follow.
But the Seneca Valley senior swimmer is keeping things in perspective as she prepares for the PIAA Class AAA championships, Friday and Saturday at the Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg.
"Winning a state title is a difficult goal to achieve," she said after Monday's practice. "This is my last state meet and I just want to come home with my best times in the events."
Safritt won the WPIAL crown in the 50 and 100 freestyles, as well as swimming a leg on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
"The most memorable moment for me is when I finished the 50, looked up at the times and saw that I had won," Safritt said of the first day of WPIALs March 3.
"That win gave me so much confidence going into the 100 the next day."
Seneca Valley coach Tom Donati has high expectations of his 200 medley relay team.
The quartet is seeded fourth behind three eastern schools, Hempfield (District 3), Emmaus and Parkland.
"Our goal is to race for the gold," Donati said. "That's going to be the first girls event and, what better way to start off than with a state title?"
The medley quartet that won the WPIAL title was comprised of Safritt (backstroke), Mandie Huffman (breaststroke), Elyse Dobrick (butterfly) and Kelly Connolly (freestyle).
Senior Kylie Gamelier will take Dobrick's spot on the team, with the latter moving onto the 200 freestyle relay team, which finished third at districts. That group also includes Connolly, Rose Snyder and Lauren Bezier.
SV's 400 freestyle relay, consisting of Connolly, Snyder, Gamelier and Safritt, will also put its WPIAL title up against the best the state has to offer.
Gamelier, the Raiders' other individual champion from the WPIAL meet, winning the 100 breaststroke, is seeded second in the event with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 5.87 seconds.
She will also swim the 100 butterfly.
Also swimming in individual events will be Connolly in the 100 freestyle and Dobrick in the 100 butterfly.
Senior Drew Snyder and sophomore Scott Bowser will represent Seneca's boys.
Bowser finished second at the WPIAL meet in the 100 breaststroke after a sixth-place mark as a freshman.
When asked what his goal was at states, Bowser pointed to the board that displays the team records and said, "That's my goal right there: to break the school record, and I'm just (.14) seconds from doing it."
Bowser was referring to Tony Sunseri's time of 1:00 in the breaststroke, set in 1992. The former heads to Lewisburg with a time of 1:00.14.
"Scott is such a talented swimmer," said Donati. "He started dropping time consistently toward the end of the season, so we knew that he had a chance to get down to just about a minute.
"Saying that and doing it are two different things, and he was able to do it at WPIALs."
Snyder didn't gain an automatic bid in either the 50 or 100 freestyle events, but he will compete at the PIAA meet since both times were within the next 16-best times in the state.
"I was pretty confident that my times were good enough to get me to states," said Snyder. "But I was very disappointed that I didn't swim better at WPIALs, though I've been staying positive for this one last meet.
"I've rested a lot over the last two weeks," he added. "My goal times are 21 (seconds) in the 50 and 47 (seconds) in the 100."
Molly Evans travels to Lewisburg after breaking two school records at the WPIAL meet. The sophomore finished sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:14.63) and seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:18.93). The latter time broke her own record of 2:19.05, set in a regular season meet against North Allegheny earlier this year.Evans is the first female from Butler to qualify for states in an individual event in 11 years.Junior diver Jessica Schnur placed fifth at the WPIAL championships last month and is seeded 20th at the state competition with a score of 359.05.Friday's events include the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay. All other events will be held on Saturday.
