Freeport's McGregor 6th in state
Brendan McGregor didn't win a state title, but he will head into the second day of the PIAA Class AA swimming championships with one feather in his cap.
The Freeport senior finished in sixth place in the 200 freestyle Wednesday night at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium, and was the lone swimmer from Western Pennsylvania to finish in the top 10.
McGregor managed a time of 1 minute, 45.06 seconds.
West York's Rodney King won the event with a time of 1:42.09.
Freeport's girls 200 medley relay squad of Andrea McQueen, Lauren Palko, Kristen Bombalski and Gail Erickson took 11th place with a finish of 1:55.00.
In individual action, Palko finished in 22nd place in the 50 freestyle at 25.45.
Knoch's Joe Wagner will bring home a 13th-place finish in the 100 butterfly (54.68). The senior entered the competition ranked 14th in the state.
Caitie Coco, Knoch's senior diver, placed 19th with a final performance of 219.35.
Grove City's boys 200 medley relay quartet of Tucker Gregg, Cameron Peterson, Chris Trinch and Garrett Caldwell was 20th with a finish of 1:46.99.
Gregg also swam the 100 butterfly, taking 31st place (57.96).
Mars' Jeff Gavin placed 25th in the 200 freestyle at 1:52.06, and the Planets' 200 freestyle relay of Gavin, Dan Pierre, Dave Pierre and Phil Armstrong was 23rd with a time of 1:36.20.
The Class AA championships will continue today with events including the 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 400 freestyle relay and boys diving.
